I am infatuated with planes, and when I pick up my rifle for the first time. It felt like it spoke to me.

Depends on what milsurp. A .22lr trainer would be a very good first gun.

>is a milsurp a good first rifle
Unless you plan on being a collector of surplus first, and a shooter second, no. They're strange guns to learn fundamentals on, and it's like learning to throw a basketball starting at the three point line.

>practical value?
Sure, you can use them for any kind of hunting you want, but a modern bolt action will run circles around most any milsurp you can buy.

>what else to buy instead?
A GOOD bolt action .22 with regular rifle proportions. I don't mean a cheap Marlin or something, but more like a CZ trainer. Or if you feel like you'll grow out of .22 quickly (you never actually do), a .308 anything is a good buy, even milsurp in this case...such as an Indian 2a1 Enfield, if it has to be milsurp for you.
>>
>>34563766
>Sure you don't mean 7.65x53 Argentinian?

yeah that's what I meant. the description is literally "7mm" so it could be either mauser or this Argentinian round.

Yeah, it makes sense though. An M39 is just a converted and rebarreled MN91, but its very interesting that they would bother to reprofile a captured barrel to M39 specs instead of throwing a new one on it.

ammunition is not too bad actually. you can shoot .44 russian out of it safely, and companies still make it:
https://www.midwayusa.com/44-russian/br?cid=9272
Reloading for the reichsrevolver is easy too because you can use shortened .44 spcl casings and regular .44 cast bullets. you can use .44 spcl reloading dies if you grind them to a shorter length.

New York Weapons Statute states, in one section— §265.1(2) that one may possess, for instance, a dagger, dangerous knife, dirk or stiletto as along as he or she has no intent to use the same unlawfully against another. However, a related section provides that if one possesses such a knife, the possession is presumptive evidence that the individual also had an unlawful intent. In effect, the otherwise innocent possessor must present evidence to rebut or overcome the presumption.

This problem is further complicated by the fact that while “dagger,” “dirk” and “razor” afford some minimal guidance as to what must be avoided, “dangerous knife” could be anything.

The Court of Appeals of New York has established judicial guidelines as to what constitutes a dangerous knife. Firstly, it may be any knife which, by reason of its design or other characteristics, “is primarily intended for use as a weapon.” Secondly, it may be a common utilitarian utensil “converted into a weapon.” Thirdly, it may be a common utilitarian knife unmodified or not designed as a weapon, but by reason of the circumstances of possession and/or the “context of activity.” In re Jamie D., 59 N. Y,2d 589 (1983). In this particular case, a “steak knife” was determined to be a dangerous weapon.

There was a dissenting judge who observed that as to dangerous knife, “the term is undefined and almost beyond salvage by judicial construction because all knives are dangerous.”

Notwithstanding this dissent, In re Jamie D. appears to be the standard test under New York law whether a particular knife or similar utensil may be found to be a “dangerous knife.” It has endured for thirty (30) years. Application of this test is a matter for the fact finder, whether it be a jury or a judge.

You know how auction sites work right? You put in your max bid, but it only goes up to the next increment. If you're outbid, but not by enough to beat your max then the site auto-bids up to the next increment.

No I know that but I was INSTANTLY outbid. I've never used ebay before. I put in 54 dollars and it instantly jumped to 55 then I bid 56 and it instantly bid 57

That's exactly how it works. Someone else has a max bid higher than what you bid, so it automatically, immediately, bids up to the next increment.

>>34568270
Its called autobidding, you can bid a certain amount but you set a hard cap at what you're more or less passively bidding on and you'll pay up to that amount. Its a scummy shitty system that pretty much disables anyone from paying that price because people can just set automatic jumps to immediately outbid you.

I may be able to help there. Last time I was at the CMP in Anniston (thank god i only live an hour away) I asked the worker there about the 1911s and he said that although the bill passed, it merely allows the CMP to sell 1911s. On top of that, like >>34568640 said, the Secretary of the Army (or some other high-up brass, can't remember) needs to release the pistols to the CMP to sell. Since no one wants to be the guy who releases a bunch of pistols to the public, it may take forever to happen. The pistols also need to be sold out of a completely separate store that will need an FFL and that will take time, resources, and new hires to make happen. Then if a SINGLE pistol is used in a crime, regardless if it was stolen or not, the program can get shut down. Now taking into account all of this, once/if they get the pistols, they will need to go over them and do arsenal work on them like they do the garands, which can take upwards of 12 months. So basically, just fuck my shit up.
>>

>>
>>34569521
store bought paper targets
>>
>>34569379
Yeah it's a damn shame.

>>34569386
From the way he described it, and I didn't actually read the law and verify if a crime is committed it is automatically shut down, there is no need for the Dems to try to shut it down, it's built in. On the other hand, it's good that the rules require the pistols to be in a completely separate FFL, so hopefully the rifles will be insulated legally.

All in all, the CMP is kind of our best kept secret, A LOT of gun owners don't even know it exists let alone the ty0pical gun grabber types. If they ever found out, there would be a shit storm.
>>
>>34569521
Cardboard targets and occasionally some steel from work.
>>
>>34569386
>>34569432
Forgot to add, the guy at the counter said that if one was used in a crime, it would be shut down regardless of circumstance. He told me that even if a upstanding citizen buys one and loves it dearly, then a street youth busts into his house and steals it and goes on to commit a crime with the stolen pistol, the program still gets shuttered. Even if the gun is reported stolen. And to deter giving out cheap murder gats, he didn't expect them to sell for any less that $1,200.
>>

>Ammo is cheaper, 57 cents per round vs 73 cents per round as of this post.
>Other lefties bitch, but the bolt works for me. The "ergo" comment is subjective.

>>34569627
I've shot ppu at about .60-.70 a round. Their bullets are actually .312, not .308 like wolf
>>
>>34569575

That's one of the most obvious points to make about how stupid shutting it down would be, and how stupid blocking the Garands was/is.

All the shit that the CMP is selling costs more and is objectively worse than newer guns. A criminal isn't going to pay $800 for a Garand when they can pay $500 for a C308 (assuming they even WANTED a battle rifle, which almost none do).

They also aren't going to spend $1000+ for a 1911 when they can buy a Hi-Point for $200, a Glock for $500 and a new manufacture 1911 for about the same.

But I'm preaching to the choir, we all know it's bullshit.

That was taken on some rocks next to a pool. What is important is lighting, cloudy days make rifles and funs in particular look sexy as all hell.
>>
>>34569675
Exactly, but because there are no "background checks" it makes career politicians super nervous to have their name associated so they decide to make it all cost prohibited. Even if they were $500, gangbangers would still buy hipoints, jimenezs and .22s. The pistols will even have background checks.

It is especially ridiculous when you think that the public paid for those pistols through taxes and war bonds, and now we have to buy them back again. Can you imagine if you wanted a sig 320 and had to pay for it to be made, and then had to pay full price on top of that? It'd be like paying 500 for a gun on gunbroker, having it shipped to your ffl and then having to pay then full price again to the ffl to actually take possession

>>34569743
Let us know how that goes. Nothing wrong with taking a mic to the store either.
>>
>>34569760

>>34569775

To be fair, there's a fair amount of work going INTO the guns, and it's not like they can reasonably give them away, though a lottery system might be interesting, and prevent hoarding.

It's no different than any other entity purchasing an item and then re-selling it when they are done.
>>
>>34569790
I understand, but it ticks me off. I just feel like the cmp should be an actual nonprofit. Just charging enough to keep people paid and the lights on. The prices they are charging/will be charging shouldn't be up there with the prices in the private sector. But I have to be realistic.
>>
>>34569870

Well, I think that they should aim to be just under market price personally. I'd like to see their firearms arm operating as a fund-raising for things like building and maintaining ranges in public lands and stuff like that.

Would be cool if they were allowed to sell any 'surp that the military captures.

It's generally considered the smokeless Swiss rifle commonly available with the least accuracy potential. The bedding, trigger and sight radius aren't the best compared to its brethren.

The K-31 is considered the opposite. That being said they're both probably more accurate than you'll be able to take advantage of. Buy what you like best!

Anon that you replied to.

To me, the biggest difference in the two is how slim the older Schmidt Rubin rifles are compared to the quite chunky K31. I really prefer a slim and elegant feeling rifle, and the 1896/11 and 1911 pattern rifles give me that feel I prefer.

For me, it's simply the feel, and I like the older ones better

Well I called them and the customer service rep said the bullet was the correct diameter, and that it has to be measured at then base of the bullet, pulled out of the case. I read online that another customer got the same response. I lied and said I pulled the round from the case to measure it. He then said to email him so we can start the return process anyways.

I guess he knows that he's full of shit and that there's no way the round could be wider at the base of the bullet without the neck of the casing being bulged out.
