Omaha wasn't that deadly actually. Hollywood make it look like there was corpses everywhere, but in fact the body count for the whole Normandy Landing is around 4000 (out of 150000) on a 100 km front. A pretty safe battle compared to the Pacific War for example.

The Normandy Landing was a key battle, strategically and politically, hence it was well covered and depicted at the time in order to forge a feeling of worthwhile sacrifice on the road of victory in the public opinion. I hate seeing shit conspiratorially and i agree that there are so many broader strokes going on. I think being a soviet soldier during some of the big encirclement battles when they were getting steamrolled would of been mentally draining.

I remember watching one documentary talking about how during the retreats even just mentioning the word 'german' was enough to induce panic.

Imagine being a young infantryman waiting for days on edge for this seemingly invincible boogeyman to attack, then you get word that it turns out an entire panzer army is only 6 hours away from your position, no one seems to know whats going on and there is general panic as you wait for instructions from higher up, you've got a few antitank guns available but the nearest tank army is tied up a few hundred kms away. You finally get orders to retreat and begin marching away into the night for your life. Later next day by around lunch time an update comes through, and dread sets in, the germans broke through further north and you've been completely encircled, there will be no supplies, no reenforcements you'll have to stand firm and hold out as long as you can.
