Explain to me how an RPG doesn't melt your face off when you fire it.

If backblast is so deadly, why is the "forward blast" not a thing?

forgive my crude ms paint illustration
>>
because russians are face hardened
>>
>>34543931
The flame coming from the solid propellant of a rpg isn't as it's initial explosive

A rpg is basically a recoilless rifle but the shell has a rocket strapped to it's back

Also I'm pretty sure the rocket on the projectile only start at a safe distance from the shooter
>>
>>34543972
Isn't as dangerous*
>>
>>34543931
The backblast hazard comes from the booster charge, not the sustainer motor.
>>
>>34543931
Two stage propellant.
>>
The initial backblast is from a gunpower booster charge. The rocket motor activates after 10 meters.
>>
The rocket motor doesn't engage until it's like 6-10 meters out.
>>
>>34543972
Depending upon warhead type, it'll self-detonate after several seconds of flight-time.
>>
>>34543931
In the case of the RPG-7:
>It is launched by a gunpowder booster charge, giving it an initial speed of 115 meters per second, and creating a cloud of light grey-blue smoke that can give away the position of the shooter.[7] The rocket motor[8] ignites after 10 meters and sustains flight out to 500 meters at a maximum velocity of 295 meters per second.
>>
>>34543931
Two stage initiation. The first stage is the solid propellant which pops instantly and gets the round flying downrange, the rocket motors kick in shortly afterwards after the warhead is already a ways away from the face.

For traditional rocket launchers like LAWs, the initial backblast is less severe, but you still don't want to be directly behind the launcher. The rocket motor's shape keeps things contained in a fairly linear line behind the rocket so the user doesn't get a face full of backblast.

For pretty much anything not specifically designed for use in a confined space, you don't want to use it inside a confined space because the blast is going to bounce around the room and jelly you.

In video games the RPGs are pretty slow, but fly on a flat trajectory. Do they fly flat in real life or do they drop?
>>
>>34544063
Everything drops.
>>
There is a reason why the first Panzershreks came with this.
luckily you can just put a faceshield infront to mitigate most of the blast.
>>
>>34544063
They drop like a bullet.

What's interesting though is they turn into the wind.

>>
>>34544128
Yeah, the manuals for the RPG-7 are very interesting when talking about windage counter adjustments.

I used to have a video saved as well showing the flight of a warhead in slow motion, showing how it rotates for stabilization, but at a very gentle rate to help preserve the HEAT cone.

It still kind of peeves me how many publications call an RPG-2 a "rocket" casually, but I guess it's something to get over.
>>
>>34544063

They're a lot faster IRL, being self-propelled their trajectory is quite flat but being fin-stabilised they tend to spin in lazy circles and turn into the wind.

I actually had this problem shooting bottlerockets out of a cardboard tube at wasps nests when I was a teenager. We created a Panzerfaust like shield out of cardboard and taped it to the tube, worked like a charm. Shit was fun.
>>34544063
They drop, and are fairly fast. Just look up some videos of them being fired, they're actually pretty cool.
>>
>>34543931
RPG fluid needs oxygen to survive.
Air is about 20% oxygen.
If there is more than that, breathe faster.
If there is less than that, breathe slower.
Your face is not made of oxygen.
The RPG fluid is instantly extinguished upon touching a non-oxygen surface.
Science, bitches.

Probably talking about grenade launchers. Either like pic related, or the other type where it's sort of like a 20th century rifle grenade, but with a huge stick going down into the barrel.

The light green things are the boosters. You have to screw them on before firing. They are filled with solid propellant that looks like uncooked pasta and they have the fins also in them.

The modern definition of it being a rocket would be a rocket motor to give it sustained thrust in-flight. The things pictured are merely propelled by the initial explosion of the powder in the weapon. These are equivalent to firing a WW2 rifle grenade which is using the energy of a blank or a bullet for propulsion.

Your picture shows a rocket though.
The barrel is acting only as a guide tube while the forward flintlock lights the motor of the rocket.

>The things pictured are merely propelled by the initial explosion of the powder in the weapon
I don't think that's accurate. That looks like a black powder rocket to me, the sort you still see today for fireworks.
>>
>>34544128
>>34544144
So in an aside from just RPGs, they turn into the wind due to thrust. The push makes them stabilize by turning into the wind. The same effect can be seen in tracer bullets adding upwards of 2% resistance to the effects of wind for long distance shooting.
>>
>>34544301

just as I expected
>>
>>34544283
>if you boiled cordite
There's some nitroglycerine content, which boils (and explodes) at 50C, so it would turn your boiling pot of water into a depth charge.
>>
>>34543931
The rocket is launched by an explosion like a bullet, then something like 20m in front of you the rocket engine kicks in.
>>
>>34545282

More specifically they turn into the wind due to drag caused by the fin stabilization. Like a weather vane.
>>
>>34544339
