Battleships are obsolete because not because they have vulnerabilities (though heavy armor belts on warships are an obsolete concept), but that their role is obsolete. Naval warfare is no longer decided by big gun duels, but by; AShMs, submarines, and aviation. On the other hand, there isn't yet an answer to the requirement for something that can advance quickly across cross-country terrain while attacked with; artillery, cluster munitions or ubiquitous rapid fire small arms. If stopping an armored thrust was easy with cheap anti tank weapons, why did the Iraqis, with large stockpiles of AT weapons, get destroyed so utterly by competent usage of armored forces not once, but twice?
