If you had to kill a bear with a melee weapon, what weapon would you chose and what would be your plan of attack.
>inb4 "I'd run my ass outta there lmao" just go with the hypothetical my dude.
Spear. I'd spear it.
>>34530663
What part would you aim for?
>>34530665
center mass I'd imagine, lungs/heart
>>34530665
The bear.
>>34530663
Same, spears are the most enlightened melee weapon.
>>34530665
Probably the chest
I'd use a fucking Urumi, death by a thousand cuts.
>>34530663
This is actually probably the best answer. Locking the spear against the ground or something is about the only way you're going to generate enough force/leverage to penetrate the bear's hide enough to kill it. Nobody in here better name any kind of slashing weapon.
You might be able to smash it's head in with a big made it hammer, but I think the spear would be more reliable.

>>34530777
>Bonzai
Good luck with that.
>>34530663
Thick spear, this is definitely the thinking man's answer.
>>34530660
Pole-axe
A car
>>34530660
Something with reach. Previous anons have said spear and poleaxe, which are both good options. I would either go with those or a sledgehammer.
Anything with reach that I could swing or thrust with a lot of force. I'll most likely have only one real shit at not dying anyway, so I ought to put it all in one swing or thrust.
>>34530660
Halberd, obviously
>>34530663
You're not going far enough. You want a spear with a fucking axe on the end as well, that way you can just sorta whack the fucker with a pointy bit.
Halberds are basically the swiss army knife of "melee" weapons. You've got pointy bits, sharp bits and hard bits.
>>34530806
This guy knows.
Bayonet with attached 7.62mm rifle. If the bayonet fails I can always club it to death with the sturdy wooden stock.
If the muzzle of the rifle is in contact with the bear's body, do the bullets count as a melee weapon since they're not technically projectiles anymore?
>>34530880
forgot pic
>>34530660
Spear. Try to hit the flank if possible. Most likely it would be hard to dig in deep enough to kill it quickly. However, you will have standoff from the sharp parts of the bear. Then just hang on for dear life and keep trying to drive the spear deeper.
>>34530856
The good thing about a spear compared to a sledgehammer is that you can simply plant the rear end of it into the ground and keep the point pointed at the bear.
>>34530660
Well this is what i will have inna woods with me today. Probably just smack it as hard as i can in the head with the axe side
That Russian bang stick they used on the rear half of the bus. Otherwise, a long chainsaw
>>34530660
>In the Slavic countries it was known as a rogatina and used since at least the 12th century. Russian chronicles first mention its use as a military weapon in 1149, and as a hunting weapon in 1255, though it was used by Prince Daniel of Galicia in boar hunting
Spontoon is the most correct answer.
>>34531096
Hilt (or whatever that bit is called) on that thing would hinder penetration. Bears have unbelievably thick hides, my mulatto.
>>34531123
>a bears hide is a foot thick
Golly, the more you know.
>>34530920
Yea, but will a wooden shaft spear take that mass? We're talking an animal many timers heavier than a horse and probably a lot more dense.
>>34531123
That's the point. Keeps the bear from running themselves through and eating you.

Pic related's blade is not a foot long, are you kidding?
>>34531690
Meaning it wouldn't penetrate a foot. Use your head.
>>34531690
You're right, its not quite a foot long.

Polar Bear male averages around 1000lbs, and commonly up to 1500lbs. Largest one ever recorded weighed 2200lbs.
You're actual point isn't wrong though, and metal hafted spears exist anyway.

To anyone saying chainsaw, why? You'd need to hit it in the neck or head and hope it was fatal. Bones, tendons, blood and muscle tend to fuck with a chainsaw quick
>>34530663
Boar spear or anything with a crossguard. Boars are big heavy things and you want every advantage to keep them at bay.
>>34530665
Throat, but I'd settle for getting the spear in the beast at all.
>>34530792

Spear is the only correct answer, it's how native Americans killed the fuckers.
>>34531249
Editing is kinda cancer, but that's still a really impressive hunt. Notice he had to close the comments, too, yet anti-gunners often go on rants about how hunters should "give the animals a chance". Kinda hard to give them more a chance than spear hunting.

>>34531249
Hah, and to think there's all these retards saying a bear's hide is way to thick to be pierced without butting a weapon to the ground. Meanwhile a completely unsupported spear easily penetrates.
>>34530660
I would use another bear. The plan is to record the awesome ensuing bear fight. Also just assumr the bear is fully undet my control, go with the hypothetical.
>>34530660
pike with crossguard 2 feet from the blade and counterpointed base.

Knuckle Dusters
Punch the bear
>>34531249
Woah dude, that penetration is actually INTENSE, jesus fuck. I was gonna say some dumb shit like a halberd or a billhook, but a straight pike would work just as well.
>>34532311
Rapier only has enough reach advantage to be useful against a human that will stop for sure when stabbed because you're duelling, a bear needs to die before it can simply move past your range, into it's own range, without much thought for the needle your stabbing it with. The bear may or may not die later, but that isn't gonna be enough to save you from the bear.

>>34530660
A pike.
That's the only correct answer. A spear might miss, too risky. Keep the bear at a distance by having it charge right into a pike.
>>34536271
>Why hasn't anyone mentioned tomahawks?
Because a tomahawk would be worthless against a bear.
>>34537470
did no one say desert eagle in that thread?
Bolas so i can have a chance at wrapping these around its front legs
>>34537768
A pike is a lot harder to use, and especially difficult against a single target. Theoretically you could get a second shot with a spear, but if the bear doesn't just shatter your very long shaft you are likely to just not hit it.
>>34537832
You're fucked mate
>>34532311
Real life bear hunters limited to melee weapons used spears with a crosspiece. Guys with swords were generally bear food.
>>34537847
Bears don't know what pikes are. It will run straight at you, just hold the pike between you and it and the bear will turn itself into a shishkebab.
>>34532311
>>34537646
this
Lets assume a bear is just smart enough to not impale itself. You can plant the spear to prevent backwards movement. This does not prevent sideways movement. If the bear can establish that the spear is between you and it, I imagine it would move it to the side out of its way.
Not trying to be a nay sayer, I'm just asking, how does a spearman handle this?
>>34530690
Who is this qt?
>>34537934
I don't think bears work that way.
