Couple of things to make your life easier, anon:
> Use clear Mineral Spirits to dissolve cosmoline and fudd residues. This will degrease the gun and remove most of the cosmo from the wood. Metal parts will need to be oiled afterward.

> Go get some cloth patches, Hoppes patches are thin, cheap shite.. Bush's twill patches are the best, followed by Tetra cotton ones.

EZ Mode cleaning method:
> Go buy a bottle of gunslick (or hoppe's) Foaming Gun Cleaner
> Alternate cleaning regimen like this:
> Oil based cleaner > Brush 10 full strokes > Patch dry > foaming cleaner 30 minutes > Patch out

The advice to buy a Mosin at this point is driven more by board culture or confirmation bias than the merits of the gun itself. And I've been here since 2009 so get fucked.

It's one of the worst bolt guns adopted by a major power, which was fine when J&G was selling them for $69.99 but now they cost more than some Mausers and many sporting rifles.

I gave up on mine.1939 dated. Put 60rds through it a while back. Every patch i put through it came out more dirty than the last. Mush have used atleast 40. In the end i just accepted the fact there was almost 80 years of commie depression and sadness in it and i would never get it out.
