In basic training/phase 1 theyll tell you to get intimate with your rifle and they mean it. You sleep with your rifle in your bivi bag, take it for a shit, its within arms reach at all times. The more you care about your rifle, the better youll treat it, thus the more chance itll work when you need it to.
First day or night of your first proper exercise youre too tired to think about anything but sleep. By the next day, youve done everything with your rifle, and you care more about making sure your rifle is clean and in working order than getting your head down.
