Let's talk about the F-4, truly the best plane of its era. Has any other aircraft, before or since, managed to serve as well or as long with so many users in so many roles?

>Say something about the Phantom that most people don't know.
If your squat switch isn't right or you deactivate it for other maintenance you can shoot off your own nose gear with a centerline gun pod (the usual station) during ground maintenance. It happened at least once in Korea. Killed an expediter who was parked in front. I wasn't there for that one and am glad of it.
J-79s could ingest an impressive amount of FOD and keep running. Two ANG Phantoms IFE'd into Moody when I was stationed there because they had a midair. The wingman's radome was smashed by colliding with his leads left stab and disintegrated with many chunks going down the intakes. Only one engine flamed out so crew didn't have to eject. The fans looked hideous but neither engine came apart. The radar antenna stayed with the package but blew backwards around it like a failed umbrella.
During violent maneuvers it's possible to snap Phantom engine mounts but the engine bay doors are so stout they hold everything sufficiently that you can RTB with no indication other than the G meter that you over G'd it. In the 1980s there were plenty of Nam vet Phantom drivers and they trained like they fought. Glad I was a 328X0. Phantom was maintenance intensive and that's putting it mildly.
If someone says they worked on them ask if they got any Aux Air Door bites.

Zipper info from a study group I was in. (I was a maintainer, not a pilot. I didn't work 104s but got to see the West German Starfighters do a practice attack on my base which was very cool.):
"The F20 had one great flaw as far as I was concerned - rearward visibility. That is inexcusable in an air superiority fighter. As for performance, I was privileged to fly quite a few sorties in the F104A with the J79-19 engine. Its performance was stellar. I regret that Kelly Johnson was prevented from building the Lancer, which rectified the inherent shortcomings, mainly pitch-up and fuel endurance, of the 104 design.
That said, here are some performance stats of the 104A/J79-19
combination.
1. Brake release to .97 Mach = 43 seconds
2. Brake release to 45000 = 90 seconds ( did that myself).
3. Cross-country cruise M2.0 at 73,000. From that altitude and speed
the letdown at idle power covered about 275 miles. ditto)
4. Accel .95 to M2.0 = 1:45; 27 miles, 1000# fuel (ditto)
5. Accel .95 to 1.05 at 25,000 in level flight w/o AB (ditto)
6. M2.5 @ 45000 - two bachelor friends of mine in a night exercise
chasing an F4 at 1.4M. (My limit was 2.2; wife and 2 kids the reason.)
7. Regularly way exceeding the altimeter's mechanical limit of 86000
on zoom climbs with the old J79-3B engines. (BT,DT many times) Never
zoomed the Dash 19 version but U2s were easy meat with it, fuel-
critical with the old engine. 25% more thrust does help there!
8. M61 gun dispersion - 3 mils. As squadron weapons officer I
harmonized all our A-models and fired in enough to verify the
harmonization procedures. Rather impressive to find all 50 rounds of
a burst inside a 3 foot circle at 1000 feet range. (Gun fired at 67
rounds a second.)
continued next post
>>34503418
9. People bitched about the Zipper's turn capabilities. Using
maneuver flaps (limit 550/1.8M) the Zipper could outmaneuver the
F4D/E and the 106. Only the F8 could give it a fight until the F15
came along.
Added comment - note the canopies on the F15/16 and the Russian
fighters -some designers know what they're doing!
Last comment - we should have cloned Kelly Johnson; he could find
simple answers to complicated problems.
Walt BJ - 700+ hours in the 104A, 2000+ in the F4D/E, IP in
both. "

The concrete structure it's firing into is called a boresight pit. It's the same thing as taking your rifle to a range, but much fucking louder. They are mostly obsolete but that distinctive structure remains at many USAF bases.
Note the aircraft jacks supporting the nose and the tiedown cables controlling the aircraft position. That's necessary not to shoot off your nose gear in testing.
look at that canting
>>34505175
You can boresight off of registration card. You don't need to boresight by firing. That is for weapons checks to make sure they are firing correctly.
You have to boresight FFAR rockets to the correct point of aim. You damn sure don't do it by firing them. You use a registration card or sometimes called a boresight card.
If you don't they just spray all over the place.

Phantom also carried side-looking radar and target towing pods.
Napalm canisters make very nice travel pods with the addition of a side door. The door is sized to fit a golf bag with some wiggling.
You can still see Nam-vintage nape cans used as travel pods. They are older than the aircraft carrying them.
>>34501766
Relatives are still in Turkish service.
>>34505229
As I said, firing is mostly obsolete. It used to be common, see previous Zipper post. I enlisted in 1981 and pits had been obsolete for several years and were no longer maintained.

F4 was the back up for the F111, we could run one or the other, but the F4 as a long term proposition needed AWACS & tankers, so even a decade over due and over priced the F111 still worked out cheaper.
Strange that 40 years later we are running Super Hornets with AWACS and tankers, in avery similar package to the F4 plan. The Supers were ordered as a temporary fix due to over due F35, just like the F4 & F111.
The one time (1999) the F111s were bombed up at Tindle, ready to launch at Jakarta it was expected to be a one way Kamikaze flight.
Even at that late date a squadron of F4s with Wild Weasels, KC135 & E3 would have been a better bet.

If we're being realistic, re engine with GE-F414EPE engines (they fit without extensive modifications to fuselage.) Strip out and replace wiring the same way the Israelis did to theirs. We now have a plane with an empty weight of around 26,000lbs and a max thrust of 52,000lbs wet.
From there just modernize it with avionics, radar, rwr, ecm and other electronic stuff. Each of those wing hardpoints can hold multiple 500lb bombs, so they can probably be fitted with 2 AMRAAMS each.
End result is a plane that can carry 12 BVR missiles in an air defense role, and still carry the shitton of A2G ordnance it could before.
A final thought: at 15,000ft a lightly loaded f-4e can sustain a 10d/s turn. Increasing thrust on the super phantom gave it 11d/s. Withe the F414 engines, it could see ~12.5d/s sustained. More if you add the close coupled canards from the YF-4E. This could get it within spitting distance of the F-16.

If only Gripen cannons (and the later sensor pods) wasn't such an off-center tumor, Gripens could rival the F-4 in aesthetics.

I'm always fascinated by aircraft maintenance and so forth, but all I got is variable geometry requires much maintenance
My grandpa flew the unarmed, photo recon version (RF-4?) in the early 60s. He put one into the ground on the border of Turkey while carrying a 4-star - flamed out both engines, ejected, hit the canopy on exit, helped by nomadic folks, and rode a camel back to base.
I'm now the same age as him and my life is boring af by comparison.
