The story and plot are quite complex
Because the story is told from the perspectives of different people telling their story of how they came to be on the planet different parts of the story reflect different aspects of SF.
There is elements of military SF, space opera, Hard SF, speculative fiction, cyberpunk.

Jk but the only thing this book has going for it is the world building. The characters are awful. They're just mishmashes of different pop culture tropes. Almost everything is revealed through exposition, and the deeper mystery isn't really that interesting.

If you want good science fiction that doesn't read like genre shit read the book of the new sun.
