I reload most of it.

Otherwise I just shop around and find the cheapest price.

Is it worth it to save brass from common calibers (.223/5.56, 9mm, .308/7.62x51, etc.) if you don't reload? I know that random milsurp calibers can be sold for a significant amount (offsetting the cost of ammo somewhat).

For the actual answer, those had their necks annealed as part of the loading process. It takes some stress out of the case after forming, essentially just allowing the case to be reloaded more times before it gives out.

I got about $9 per thousand 5.56 brass on my last trip over, and this was brass that wasn't reloadable. (trimmigs, spent primers, overworked, cracked, badly dented, case head separation, etc)

SGammo is my go-to.
Acquire cheapest ammo in terms of cents-per-shot that works in your gun and at your range for plinking/practice. (So if your favorite range only allows brass, don't buy too much steel/aluminum case).

Then get a few boxes of your preferred fuck-shit-up ammo and keep that as your go-to defense ammo. It's ideal to have maybe one full can of that stuff sealed up in case shit and rotate whatever you keep in your mag ready to go every month or so. IE shoot off one mag of good ammo along with the cheaper stuff.

It's a result of a process where they anneal the brass to form the bottle-neck. Before that it is a straight-walled case, but of course 5.56 is necked. They could clean it up before shipping, but since it's purely aesthetic and Federal makes military ammunition where nobody cares what it looks like they don't bother with that extra step/expense.
