take down pin is .250 inches in diameter going through the lower and upper twice. The thickness of those total is close to .350 inch if not more.

SA= 2pi RH+2pi R^2
2*3.14*.350*.125+2*3.14*(.125)^2
=0.37 inches

There is no way in hell the latching part of that is larger than that.
The overall length of the latch doesn't fucking matter, the only thing that maters are the two contacting surfaces.

I don't really see the point unless you're an assassin in a Hollywood movie.
It might be useful for tank crews and pilots though. They wouldn't have to settle for a rifle with a tiny barrel or an SMG if they could simply fold their weapon in half.

Actually the ak74 has a variant where a folding stock there is pictured.
see that gunmetal grey rectangle with a circle on the right of it on the receiver? That means that the receiver accepts a folding stock. the hinge is on the opposite side as the camera shows and it latches on.

I'm imagining the buffer tube folding one way and the barrel folding the other way for saving maximum space. An "S" shape, I guess. Suppose you'd also want the receiver, stock, and barrel to be of equal length so you didn't have one of them jutting out.
