The weirdest self defense "tip" i got was when I was in community college from a fat weeb who said that what he was going to carry is a glock with "half rubber bullets and half real bullets" so he could shoot a robber with the rubber bullets and if he didn't stop, then shoot him with the real stuff. unsurprisingly he was also taking Kendo lessons

Well it wasn't intended as a self defense weapon but it happened that way.

I work in the O and P field and had a patient who was large but not really fat. 6 4 ish at 235lbs. He'd lost a leg in a motorcycle accident below the knee. He wanted a specialty foot so he could keep riding and used a cane for confidence cuz he royally fucked his knee on the amputated side in the same crash.

So anyway he kept fucking up his fake leg from various shit. Once a piece of road debris, another accident, and a drunken mishap with his cousin's boyfriend crushing his foot with a bobcat. This was over a period of ten years so not anything I'd call above average for catastrophic equipment failure typically seen.

So i made him a set of heavy duty motorcycle boots with a tool steel cage and a custom stainless pylon and fairing for a new carbon Kevlar socket. Looked sick and tough as fuck.

So some Yahoo tried to rob him and took his cane. So he popped his leg off and beat the fuck out of said yahoo with his fake leg.

I just see too many ways the stringy bit could bunch up when you go to grab it, or you grab the wrong part, but I guessit depends on how you carry it. Or the attacker is too close for it's reach to really matter, like you don't have the room to swing if someone came right up on you

I'm not sure how you'd practically carry that in the first place with or without a handle, so turning it into a flail wouldn't make that much of a difference. Personally I carry a knife as well, but a flail with a handle would have a reach advantage of probably over a foot and still be very easy to obtain.

when I was edgy carried a small combination lock that I would hold like a brass knuckle and a single sharpened car key. The key didn't come out right at the key copying place so it was useless for its intended purpose.

Knives and knuckles have entirely different methods of use. With knuckles, you don't need any aditional training or knowledge how to use them. You fight just like you would with your hands, except you don't straight punch. That's pretty much it.

They're amazing with hammer fists, rabbit punches, and knocking strikes against bones. They're also better than knives for slashing, counterintuitively. A knife will cut you, but knuckles make the skin burst, and do muscular damage beneath.

It's also harder to pry knuckles out of someone's hands than it is to do with a knife.

There's a difference between brass knuckles and knuckle dusters.

Knuckledusters are specifically used for "dusting", i.e. raking motions used to mess up somebody's face. You wear them on your knuckles because the impact from punching with them are likely to make your fingers swell and be a bitch to take off.

Brass knuckles have bigger, oval-shaped holes and therefore allow you to punch with them without worrying about your fingers swelling up or breaking.

Actually, you can break some of the bones in your fingers pretty easily if you throw a punch with dusters the same as a boxers punch.
