Just get a Ruger 10/22 its the most basic semi auto .22 that holds 10 rounds and is reasonably priced.

They are around 420$ in my slavshit country so it should be the same in yours. The average ammo is just around 8$ per 50 rounds though you can get shit ammo for much less.

Bolt action guns are pretty easy, you want smooth operation of the bolt with no "scraping" or "grinding" sensations.

To take the bolt out on a Mauser action gun, you open the bolt and then open the bolt gate and pull the bolt out the back. To take the bolt out of most other bolt actions, you open the bolt and then pull the trigger and pull the bolt out the back of the gun.

Inspect the metal of the bolt for any thin lines (possible crack) or gouges. Inspect the receiver of the gun for similar.

Point the muzzle at a strong light source and peer down the barrel from the receiver end, looking for pitting, haze, bulges, or scratches. Bring a good stout piece of thin rope (2 or 3 mm), and tie a 5x5cm patch of soft cloth to it, put a bit of oil on the patch, and pull the rope through the gun from back to muzzle if bore looks dirty, and then check again.

Sights should be firmly attached to the rifle and look straight.

Stock should not have cracks near trigger guard our other attachment points.

I'd also suggest finding some kind of handgun too, a rifle is fine and good for defence of home/homeland, etc, but for defence of self, a pistol can't be beat, and if the world really goes to shit, it's helpful to have a holdout blaster, after all, a gun won't do you any good if you don't have it with you.

For pistols, breakdown is more complicated, but if you know how to take down a Browning action pistol (1911, HiPower, Glock, Tokarev), a Walter style action (PPK, Makarov, P64, etc) and a Beretta style action, you can get the slide off of almost anything.

Inspect the slide like you would the bolt, inspect the barrel the same, examine the ejector (usually pinned to the frame) for peening, the extractor (on the frame) for damage, the feeding surfaces (bits between magwell and chamber) for roughness/alterations, the other moving parts for wear, the frame for cracks, the safety (if present) for positive detents in both on and off positions and smooth movement, the natural alignment of sights when you present the pistol (subjective), and the fit in your hand of the grip (also subjective).
