Horses were an important part of any capable military dating all they way back into the days of Romans, Greeks, Phoneticians, Carthaginians, Turks, Persians etc.
Once you got into the Industrial Revolution with mass produced clothing (among other tech), the phase-out of horses in favor of motor vehicles was a long and slow process.
As such even Patton wore riding pants and boots (he started as a cavalry guy), despite the fact he rode in a Jeep throughout WWII.
You can do ninja kicks that would otherwise not be possible in ordinary pants unless they are made out of stretchy fabric.
