I want an AR10 that can hit steel 8x10 plates up to 500 yards.
I don't need 1MOA
I don't need "battle-ready" autism
I just want a .308 rifle that's reasonably well put together

What's my best bet for under $2,500? Built or bought?
This is before glass, I'd like a recc on that as well under $1k for 100-500 yards

Happy Friday boys

LMT MWS

DPMS G2. Depending on model will run you anywhere from $850-$1400. Available in everything from 14.5" lightweight profile to 24" full bull barrels and with fixed A2 or milspec adjustable stocks. WILL be MOA or better with match ammo. Is somewhat more parts-compatible with the AR15 than other AR10's, extending aftermarket, and is lighter as well (weighs about the same as a SCAR17s when comparing similar barrel lengths).

For glass I'd recommend either trying to find a NOS Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 or a new Vortex Viper PST gen2 3-15x50, they're fucking fantastic for the money and without buying used they're probably the best target/tactical scopes on the market under $1000.

Another question, am I losing much by going with a 16" vs 18 or 20" barrel at the range I'm looking at

For 500 meters and under 16" is perfect.
>>
>>34476671

How's the fit an finish?
Anything you don't like about it
>>
>>34476626
Aero builder kit (lower, upper, handguard)
Ballistic Advantage Hanson profile barrel
Toolcraft nitride bolt
Magpul UBR or PRS stock
Geissele trigger (SSA, SSA-E, DMR, 3-gun.. whatever you prefer)
Grip that fits your hand
Bipod and adapter of your choice

Someone to put all that together if you can't yourself.

Trijicon Accupower 1-8x and rings for such

Should be way under $3500 and do better than what you want it to. Easily a 800-1000 yard gun in the right hands.

I agree it has marginally better glass, but I greatly dislike the turrets and the reticles it's offered in.

It would be a better optic than a gen1 PST, but I really don't think it's a better optic than a gen2 PST.

>>34476626
You'll be losing between 100 and 200 fps of muzzle velocity depending on the load you decide on. This can be gamed with reloading (using fast powders in short barrels or slower than standard powders if you've got a fucking long tube on it).

These guys did a test on it.
http://rifleshooter.com/2014/12/308-winchester-7-62x51mm-nato-barrel-length-versus-velocity-28-to-16-5/

Real world practicality is you're looking at about 20" of additional drop and 4" of additional drift at 500m comparing a factory 175gr TMK load (such as Black Hills) going from 20" to 16".
>>
>>34476695
That one isn't mine. I have a 16". The fit and finish is great.

>Anything you don't like about it
It's heavy but it doesn't matter much to me because I shoot it mostly prone.

I would not put the 3 gun trigger in a .308. I switched my SD-3G for the SSA I had in the 15
>>
>>34476734
I agree, but triggers are one of the most subjective things so I was just leaving that open to whatever.

>still torn on barrel length
It is a tough decision.

First off, bullet drop is a nonissue because it's both constant and predictable as long as you're shooting known distances (such as 99% of target shooting). This leaves wind drift the major detriment of short barrels.

Shorter barrels are lighter than longer barrels of the same and generally even similar barrel profiles. If you want to both carry it a long distance or frequently AND shoot it for long periods of time at a go, a short thick barrel is the ticket.

You can mitigate the weight of a long barrel by either going with a fluted one or going a step down in barrel contour. You lose rigidity doing this, which means you will experience vertical stringing sooner and to a greater degree, so if you're planning on parking yourself somewhere and shooting several boxes of ammo in rapid succession this might not be the choice for you.

If you don't care about portability, longer is always better. You made it sound like this was going to be a target gun, if that's the case a long barrel makes achieving first round hits slightly easier because of the lower wind drift.

I have 2.5 AR10's. One has a 24" full-bull .308 barrel on it, and weighs over 25lbs with the fuckhuge optic I have on it. The other has an 18" "not-hanson" profile .243win barrel on it and weighs under 9lbs with optic. The third is just a receiver set currently that I can't figure out what I wanna do with.

If you only want to reach out to ~500yds any decent 18 or 20" AR-15 with something like a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24 with a BDC reticle can reach out 600M easily enough.

Please disregard if you want a .308 just because.

The 6.5 is literal unobtanium right now. I haven't found seen any reviews of the .308 version either.
