Do you guys like what I did with my WASR? I bought it from a friend for $200 because it's pretty beaten up with some slight surface rust, still shoots fine though. I took the original wood off and put some russian laminate, got some russian bakes for it and a russian sling. I think it looks nice with a sort of battlefield pickup look. I sold the old wood so in total i've probably put in $200 for the rifle, $10 for the sling, $50 for the wood with the amount I sold the old wood for taken off, and let's just say $40 in mags because I got some steel ones as well.

I am about to be given a "Mak-90" by a family member, and he claims that it has a stamped slanted receiver (harder to find buttstocks) with a thumbhole stock installed. I've come to learn this is common on sporterized Norinco Mac-90s, but he also claims that this rifle isn't Chinese.

Is there any validity to this claim? Are there any Eastern European rifles that used the slant receiver design? Is it Chinese and he's just retarded?

I will of course verify when I get it in a few weeks, but I figured I'd ask you guys. I know very little about AK/AKM variants.

Only thing is that I don't think I'm going to be able to get a 551 in time and I'm worried the 553R won't have steel reinforcements for the AK mag. I messaged JDI and they confirmed they do only have "around 10" 551's left. He said he didn't know if the 553Rs would have steel reinforcements, but he said that they are the LB versions with the grenade ring.

First online gun order through a local FFL dealer. Experience so far has been pretty good, first semi-auto rifle for me. Definitely exciting times.
>>
>>34476895
the post 5 pages in is my wasr-10, was one of my first rifles too. it's a blast and i've had 0 problems with it since i've got it. I've only ordered online once I tend to try to find shit locally or at gun shows. hard market for AK stuff locally though, only can find shit online.
>>
>>34476869
Ah makes sense. 556R is a nightmare.

slr-104 or save up for a sgl-31?
>inb4 vepr
no thanks, i know they're wonderful but the rpk style is a turn off for me, even though its just a little bit of weight added on.
>>
>>34476919
Both. Get the SLR-104FR though, unless you have the 'tism and want to make an AK-74M clone, then go with the SGL31`
>>
>>34476919
Do you want a folder or fixed stock?
>>
>>34476936

>>34476941
I just thought about that after I posted it, did Saiga ever import one that has a folder? I think they're just fixed right? i'd be mounting optics so I wouldn't be able to use the folding option but it's still a nice option to have.
>>
>>34476904
Nice, glad to hear you've had 0 problems with yours. Midwest gun market isn't bad, but still not a ton of AK stuff. Right now only have a few family heirlooms, my 870 12Gauge, and a mainly circa 1940 98k.

I have both 556R and 556XI R that were moth flawless had the mag reinforcement point. The rifle was dead accurate, a bit heavy, but loads of fun to shoot. Took any ammo I shot also. I heard about shit rifles however I got lucky.
>>

>>34476966
fuck me, i'll just not be an autist and get the slr. saves me money in the future for a krink.
>>
>>34476951
>I just thought about that after I posted it, did Saiga ever import
No, Saiga is the model number. The SGL31 is a Saiga which has been converted from it's sporter import version by Arsenal of Las Vegas
>one that has a folder?
Yes, the SGL31-94, it has the proper 5.5 AK-74M
>I think they're just fixed right?
Most, the '94 isn't though but you're talking something much rarer than a bonestock SGL31
>i'd be mounting optics so I wouldn't be able to use the folding option but it's still a nice option to have.
The glory of the side mount is that most mounts maintain zero/act like a QD optic/mount
>>
>>34476966
You're correct, Arsenal installed the trunnions, they are not factory installed
>>
>>34476984
thanks for the detailed answer. like I said above i'm just gonna hold back my 74m autism and get a slr.

>>
>>34476998
The nice part is that you can convert your SLR-104FR into an AKS-74 clone still.
>>
>>34477024
My idea was to buy it with the polymer stock and then find a triangle on the files so i'd have the option of both. How is the grip and handguards that come with it? Do people ever replace them or is there no point?
>>
>>34477041
You could but they're pretty solid, quality wise on par with Russian or Bulgarian military sets. Personally I've been wanting to /realplum/ out my SLR-104FR with a shiny plum pistol grip, handguard, and a triangle folder.

How is that rifle 922r compliant?
>>
Is it worth it to get an aftermarket muzzle brake? Or will I be pleasantly surprised by the preinstalled slant brake?
>>
>>34477124
Just depends, good muzzle brakes really will help if you are having troubles. Shoot it first with the slant brake and if you are fine with it then keep it, it looks better with it.

It looks nice, anon. Good price too. I'd consider trying to find a different stock if you want an accurate look though; that lightening cute in the middle is indicative of an AK-74 stock.

Also, met Larry Vickers today. Chatted about AKs some and his visit to Kalashnikov Concern. He didn't reveal anything new or groundbreaking, but he was fun to talk to.

Vickers has done interesting stuff and seen interesting things. I've got quite a few of his products I really like too (AR sling, Glock control parts).

I had to pick his brain a bit about the Tula AK-74 at a bare minimum, but he and the other trainer there (local guy, ex-SEAL I think) started telling stories and it was cool to just hear it all. Sure as hell was a better way to spend my Friday night than sitting around with all the loonies at RTX.

I got a Saiga 7.62x39 back in the AWB days for cheap, tossed a bullet guide in it and called it good. Getting to the point I wan't to do something with it, was thinking of converting it till I saw this set from IronWood, gotta say this shit looks good and almost makes want to not convert it. With how cheap other AKs are I almost just wanna get another one and leave my Saiga unconverted. What does /ak/ think?

Also who makes a decent extended mag catch? I didn't do a hot job when I filed mine down to fit AK mags. I also want to rivet it in instead of the nut and bolt shit.

Can someone advise? I've gotten pretty desperate for a side folding AK in 5.45x39 and I'm looking at this Saiga that was converted by the seller. Now it looks great but one problem with the build.

10/63 is Romanian National Guard/Army surplus parts.
10 is new production civilian but made in the same factory.
Both are about the same.

The fit and finish of the 10 is usually better because it's made for export.
10/63 is just cooler because of how it started life.

Just met a young guy at the gun show selling AK kits that recommended the AKfiles to me.
Which one of y'all is that?
>>
>>34482875
Good thing is that in the south you can have slaves do all the yard work.
>>
>>34482802
It is nothing special compared to any of my other rifles. It is 9lbs with a full magazine and an 8.9'' barrel, the trigger is what I would describe as a "triple stage", and it doesn't come with a steel lower. The accuracy is on par with my SBR AR15's, but out of the box it didn't like my handload 77gr smks with 23.5gr Tac powder. I bought the 4-way gas regulator and it made everything better, but I've got the best accuracy with 55 and 64 grain bullets.

This rifle is honestly a novelty for me as I don't use it for competitions or any real heavy shooting. I bought this back in 2013 when I thought actual SIGS would never come into the country again. If you do buy one, spare parts are available and have come down significantly in price, so I would recommend you get atleast a spare BCG and barrel.

tl;dr you won't be disappointed with one, but the price is outrageous.

It balances fine. Most of the weight is in the middle of the rifle. Recoil is minimal (because lol heavy as fuck gun) and I don't have an issue with it. I should also add that the 9lbs comes with a full mag, pic rail mounted on the upper receiver, aimpoint pro and surefire light. FYI, first shipments of Vympel-made Red Army Standard may be hitting the US now. I was at Cabelas just now and noticed some boxes of 7.62 that were marked as "neck and primer sealed" on the shipping box, which the typical Ulyanovsk stuff isn't. Couldn't get an employee to crack open a box or sell to me as anything less than a 640 round case though, so I don't know if that was the Vympel stuff for certain.

I think we'll know when the first batches of RAS Vympel ammo hits our shores, likely long before it's on shelves in stores.

Only 5.45x39 rifle I see on TGT is an SLR UR with fake supressor. No one in the AKfiles responds to my PMs or emails. Dunno if it is because I am new and only have posted in the MP.

Is this what you saw on the box?
>It's from TCW

Generally speaking, if it's a 640rnd spam can, it's more than likely from Tula Cartridge Works.
700rnd cans are Wolf, usually made by Barnaul.
The Romanian RAS sealed stuff only comes in cardboard cases/range packs.

Wire folders in general are uncomfortable to shoot. If you don't NEED a folder than you definitely don't need an EG.
>>
>>34484365
I want a folder, is the thing.
It's a fun look and it'd be going on my 5.45; I'm not enough of a pussy that the recoil will matter.

My question is why they're so much cheaper than others.

Does anyone know the drama that happened between Jim Fuller and Rob Ski? I heard mutterings on AK Files that Jim Fuller threatened to sue Rob over some bullshit.

Yeah, he specified that and wanted the rifle for $1,200 + shipping. To his (small) credit he was upfront about it and included a bunch of hi res images.

Its due to market conditions. Ive seen a bunch of EG and polish wire folders recently. Part of the uncomfortable nature of those stocks is where its positioned. All of them are centered on the receiver, with the exception of the push button romy. I just picked up a romy push button and it works fine for me. With just a row of paracord I can easily find the sights. The offset mimics a thicker stock.

I just kind of had my opens in regard to that dude. I've read some threads on AK files that he participated in and eesh.

The fact of the matter is you won't find kit built rifles with foreign barrels on them, for the most part.

At least not from companies.

You'll fine a shit ton of kit build rifles with OG barrels from garage-builders.

Ahh, yeah been running into those for a bit now. Praying one seller's buyer falls through but he tells me the dude has bought $4k of stuff from him.

Do TexasGunTrader users expect people in different states to buy or are they trying to avoid that by using that site? I'm still gonna ask but I'm making an account and of course they aren't listing states/cities outside of Texas.

They're usually looking for people within driving distance to meet with.

You can cut and crown a barrel fairly easily.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_Aq1x2rJ4U

>>34487294
You'd obviously have to crown it after you cut it. A power drill, brass screw and angle grinding compound will work just fine, there's a million videos on YouTube of how to do it

Honestly, it wouldn't even require specialized work. Pretty much any competent (THIS IS THE VERY IMPORTANT PART) gunsmith has cut and crowned more barrels than he can count.
