It's tricky, if you're a non-MA resident and move to MA with an AR15, you can keep it for sure.
What's mostly restricted is sales. You couldn't sell it if you move from another State to MA.
I have no idea about going to a free State, getting something fun, and then coming back to this freedomless commie shithole.
That said you'd still need an FID or LTC if you brought it back, and assuming you have one, a Mini-14 might just be easier my dude.
