B), these days the brass is better and guns can use smokeless powder, meaning you can REALLY crank that fucking thing up, I'm not exaggerating when I say that a real hot .45-70 with a heavy hardcast lead bullet (or something like a solid copper Extreme Penetrator) can just obliterate a big bad bear like a grizzly.

Dude, there are some african safari countries that have a minimum size caliber you can use. Most are 375 HH.

Notice I said "and/or", as in you should take both or if you can only take one, just the. 375 H&H. Having actually hunted in Africa I can assure you though that a .300 win-mag will take anything besides the big 5 , and even then many hunters at our camp took cape buffalo and lion no problem with one. I would still prefer the. 375 H&H for those though, or a. 416 rigsby.

Honestly I use both. 45-70 has a lot more commercial ammo available but both are worth reloading. In the northeast I only use these rounds for 3 animals and they are overkill for 2 of them. I end up using the 45-70 more often due to terrain and the h&h only really sees use when I can shoot past 100 yards. Not sure why you are trying to push the h&h over the 45-70 using Africa safari logic with how small a market it is but glad you enjoy one of my top 3 favorites

.300wm is fully appropriate and legal for almost all of the plains game. In fact it's well into overkill territory for most of the antelopes, and a lot of the PH's have loaner rifles in 6.5x55, .270win, and similar for them since you'e typically shooting 250+ yards at animals the size of whitetail deer.

The .375 restriction is for the true dangerous game.

.30-40 was in service after it succeeded the 45-70. However the .45-70 has such a bad BC rating that it is only close-medium range with great energy diminishing drag. It only went smokeless the moment everyone dropped blackpowder casings in the civilian market.
