Oppenheimer North Korea did a bad again and now there are talks of what they launched being an ICBM that can carry a nuclear payload. What is your sage wisdom?

Also Nuclear weapons thread.
>>
Oppenheimer is gone, friend.

Dust in the wind.
>>
>>34441019
but who else will talk about nuclear weapons and their use in a factual manner and spare us from atomic fuddlore?
>>
>>34441013
The newest missile launch looks like it was a ~7000 kilometer range "intermediate" ballistic missile, but it's effectively an ICBM at this point, capable of striking anywhere from Juneau Alaska to Townsville, Australia. Against closer targets, it's quite capable of lofting its payload into space over North Korea's borders before dropping a warhead inside of a reentry vehicle on South Korea, China, or Japan.
>>
>>34441036
Is this cause for more concern that usual with them?
>>
>>34441090
If the initial reports that it's a Hwasong-12 derived launch vehicle, North Korea has a road mobile ICBM that would be a lot more survivable and harder to track than North Korea's fixed launch site assets.
>>
Americans are going to war in 2018, aren't they. You can see that playing out now.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4550380/Mattis-says-war-North-Korea-catastrophic.html

Chinese stock devaluation, NK missile tests, Communist Party congress to appoint Xi on second term this fall. Trump took the whole Senate up to the White House, and basically told them this was going to happen. They will play diplomacy and try sanctions in 2017, and then go to war.
>>
>>34441130
If the initial reports are correct*
>>
>>34441130
So I suppose it's business as usual sabre rattling from a tyrant.

Hopefully this will get China on board to enforce strict sanctions on them.
>>
>>34441150
You don't understand the problem.

North Korea's capability to credibly strike every regional power with Nuclear Weapons is nearly in place. If they make further progress, North Korea cannot be disarmed at all with conventional forces without inviting nuclear retaliation on any nation that gets involved.
>>
>>34441176
So this is where the preemptive strike option will be floated with this act as a potential tipping point?
>>
>>34441195
I don't know where the line is drawn. It's part of an alarming trend that's threatening to make First Strike the only kinetic option that will minimize collateral damage on surrounding nations.

Its mushie season right now so at the moment that's what the CBD guys are doing, but I was under the impression it was usually weed and/or party drugs

I have seen the milky way in all of its divinity, but you do have to leave the city to get a good look at it, high country and along the Murray are the best spots in my opinion.

Also, I contest the idea that Asian run fish and chip shops are unAstralian, this country has a proud history of people migrating in and doing one specific thing far better than the locals, like Arabs and kebabs, or wogs and auto mechanics. Sure its unexpected that the Asians of all people took to fish and chips so well, but its absolutely in the tradition of this country regardless.

i think if it really happens, they will cause more damage with conventional arty on south koreans than with their nukes.

Like how many warheads will they even have?

then you have 3 or 4 nations airforces waiting for them to launch something.

nothing will reach the US or even Japan. Their best bet is trying to suicide bomb the country with nukes.

North Korea doesn't have the capability to reliably detonate a nuke on a warhead, the minituization isnt at that level yet they'll need to go Jack Ripper and strap that shit to a plane.

What will happen is casualties will be in the thousands at worst for conventinal artillery and rockets range is more towards the outskirts of Seoul which are heavily populated but not mega city levels the center is.

The more pressing issue is how much of a hit the bases near the border will take and how fast the rest of the country can get mobilized.

We're at the cusp of that but not quite, people misinterpret the two separate programs right now, the missile program and the nuclear program.

The missile program is going faster than anticipated but they don't have the ability to put any nuke on it just yet.

As of now North Korea does not have multi stage nuclear capability and does not have the miniaturization necessary to put it on the ICBM, it's worrying because they can strap conventional explosives and do a fair bit of damage far inland but that's V2 levels of actual damage compared to cost.

The ultimate goal is at least a nuke on a missile, ideally multi stage but right now they are maybe half maybe a full decade away.

Koreans and overloaded cruise liners arent a great mix.

Also there are active bunkers everywhere including the subway system being one and they drill in once every year or so to get into one.

First artillery barrage has about a minute to reach and can't level everything so survival isbactuallu pretty likely provided they don't have millions if pounds of gas shells.

Even then they would focus on military bases anyway first. There's only so many guns with only so many shells, autisticly spamming the edge of the capital is pointless when you have way more important problems on your doorstep

Make a deal with the Chinese that if the DPRK is gone, there wont be any need for US forces on the Peninsula, especially if they help with integration of the north.

US gets to wash its hands of North Korea, China gets US forces off the Asian mainland, South Korea doesn't have to pay for the reintegration of the north.

The Norks have a serious problem: they bought their weapon designs from A Q Khan. Khan was involved with the Pakistani nuclear weapons program when their pits were Oralloy (HEU). This has two big advantages: you don't have to mess around with the hellish material that is plutonium and you can get a bigger yield before you have to worry about your weapon melting down if you drop it; the latter is also a disadvantage, the higher critical mass of HEU compared to plutonium means you can't miniaturise as much.

North Korea has no established pipeline for the large scale manufacture of plutonium nor does it have the academic power to design new devices. A device suitable for putting on the top of an ICBM is a couple orders of complexity more than a straightforward spherical implosion design (with the DPRK is barely getting a handle on) and requires academic titans in fluid mechanics and applied mathematics as well as a supercomputer or two. There are even greater mathematical challenges with HEU but NK never had to tackle them because they bought all the equipment and designs from Khan. They have painted themselves into a corner with their current weapons and would have to start the development process from scratch to produce something that could reach the US on their current missiles.

tl;dr, North Korean devices are low yield, clunky, unfinished and oversized.

cont...
>>
>>34453690
...Compare that hulking monstrosity, which likely isn't even the full physics package (contains all the firing circuits and, in the case of variable yield weapons, tritium) to the physics package of a W80, a device with 20 times the yield of the largest NK nuclear test.

>>34453730
>They have painted themselves into a corner with their current weapons and would have to start the development process from scratch to produce something that could reach the US on their current missiles.
This part is terribly incorrect.

The device in your picture is a boosted fission device, about 60cm in diameter and about 300 kg.

Note in the video images of the rocket staging that you are not looking at a nosecone, that is clearly a shroud.
This is a novel missile, and it is clearly capable of lofting the known boosted fission device to Alaska.

You are correct that the devices are low yield, but to dismiss them as unfinished is not credible.

Your assessment of the difficulties in putting their design on top of this latest missile are VERY overstated.

You are also comparing the design of a practised nuclear power with close to 1000 tests under its belt to one with a handful.
You are also falling into the trap of mirroring. You think that The DPRK will follow the same path that other nuclear powers have gone down because they have the same strategic goals. It is clear that the DPRK is not proceeding down the same path and they do not have the same goals in mind.

North Korea is limited in what they can achieve, there is no question of that. They are stuck with boosted HEU, they are limited in motor technology as well.

Your claim that they have some sort of problem lacks merit. If they were planning to develop in the footsteps of other nuclear powers, you might have a case, but it is clear they are not. The North Koreans are not attempting to build high yield or thermonuclear weapons.

I would add that the largest technical challenge remaining for the DPRK ICBM program is actually development of the actual RV. Thats why the nose of the recent test was significant. They have the weapon they need. Now they need to make sure it survives re-entry and is accurate enough to hit an area urban target.

I'm hearing mixed things about their miniaturization capabilities I'm aware they don't actually need anything larger than a tactical nuke on a proper missile to pretty much cement their place as a state for the foreseeable future but how close to that are they?

He's been doxxed like 3 times. Every time it just proved his bona fides. The problem came when some mouthbreather started stalking him, calling him at work and the like.

Oppenheimer still puts on his trip occasionally, but it's not like the old days when he would launch a thread with a pic of trinitite and answer questions for a few hours.

All they need is a RV. They have the throw weight for their chosen design, it fits inside the dimensions of the missile, all they need is for it to survive the flight and go off near where they want it.

The biggest problem I have with that analysis is that it really doesn't look like NK has boosting. It's not even clear if the Pakistanis had boosting when they were using pure Oralloy weapons, when a nation is coy about its capabilities and talks in mixed terminology, I'd always point to the British describing Orange Herald alternately as a thermonuclear device and as a megaton-range weapon.

The value of throwing a fission weapon at the US is also unclear, it would probably be no more effective at causing impairment of US military capabilities than a conventional warhead (though it would cause more deaths) and infinitely more effective at getting their entire country levelled.

What are they doing with their lithium plant?

I'm not sure how well the supercomputer part applies. If the us could do it 50 years ago with the very first computers then the norks should easily have the same computing power with modern computers. They'll still need all the other stuff you mentioned but modern computers will definately be more than enough.

It's possible but not a given that they're producing tritium. For example, isotopically pure lithium-7 has a variety of uses in certain types of reactor.

>>34454167
Sorry, that was unclear, acquiring the computer isn't a challenge, getting the people to run it to produce the extremely complex implosion geometries is.

>It's possible but not a given that they're producing tritium. For example, isotopically pure lithium-7 has a variety of uses in certain types of reactor.

>Available information strongly indicates that North Korea has built and is operating a lithium 6 production plant that is part of its nuclear weapons effort.

It would seem strange that the DPRK would set up a lithium plant for reactor types that they don't have and have no intention of using it to boost their weapons.

>getting the people to run it to produce the extremely complex implosion geometries is.
You are vastly overstating the difficulties.

They can make money good enough to get circulated by banks, I'm sure falsifying Chinese documents gor someone to study nuclear physics would be a cake walk.

Pretty sure that guy meant draft all Koreans that are stateside because they are all a bunch of cunts who are Proud to be Korean but have never been there intentionally and have spent most / all of their lives here in comfort.

Koreans are generally an obnoxious people and the first generation of them to be born stateside are even worse. Their parents say "I am proud to be an American" and their kids say "I do Tae Kwan Do, speak 3 sentences in Korean, have SEOUL420 as my license plate and check out this sickass Korean flag tattoo".

They also have a massive superiority complex towards other asians even though Korea was a Siam tier backwater until the last two decades.

Rationally speaking, we need to go in there and invade and waste them. In a modern and politically correct democracy though, I dunno, maybe try to placate them and hope that they don't threaten us with greater force in the future. If we took lessons from history, think of what the ancient Roman state would do if such a problem appeared before them. There would be no hesitance or mercy in eliminating the threat.
