Get a PSA AR-15. Spikes or Aero Precision if you want a step above PSA. It'll cover your bases and can be had for 500 and under. Get into shooting and decide if it's for you or not. Maybe get an AK like the deadhead above me wants you to get. Also get a shotgun. New ones can be had for under 300 or 250. New Remington finishes are shit and will rust so if you want an 870, get an old police one. Mossbergs are great too. Get a 500 or 590. People debate Remington vs Moss all the time. Just get what you like

if you are feeling adventurous you can get an ar-15 for that much.

if you want a good handgun get a used glock or a police trade in glock from buds gunshop. generally they just have some holster wear but are like new mechanically.

You can take it hunting, camping, throw it in your backpack and go. Takes a second to set up but it's useful for shooting small stuff like squirrels and rabbits. you could kill a human or other large animal with the right shot placement. Hell, I have several guns and I really would like one myself.
