I genuinely don't understand. Why is this shit so expensive when $50 howard leights have a higher sound rating, are electronic, and to boot are vastly cheaper

No one is forcing you to buy them anon.

Howard Leights don't form a seal worth a shit on my ears. The NRR doesn't matter if they don't actually form a seal. The sound attenuation and quality is shit compared to Peltors too. I agree they seem overpriced.

More than likely a person will defend themselves from a home invader and firing a .357 magnum inside a house will ruin your ears.

I keep my hearing protection hanging off my bed post for that reason and incase somebody snores or a rice rocket with the bass up drives slowly past my house.

Only dumb fagots buy this overpriced garbage. Silicone swimmers ear plugs from riteaid(acks is the brand) are much better. Use two for each ear.
>>
>>34430998
And hear nothing, so much fun. After borrowing a pair of electronic muffs, I don't want to go back to plugs. I say "WHAT" a fuckload less often now at the range.
>>
>>34428704
I think he's trying to say that hearing loss is both permanent and cumulative, so the damage(not just the ringing) is really only undone when you die.

NRR is a rating that is created from other measurements. Sometimes NRR can be misleading. Basically it's a sort of average of noise reductions over a wide range of frequences. Comtacs (and most competing electronic hearing protection models) are designed to have their best noise attenuation in the frequency ranges of common gunshots. So the NRR is somewhat misleading. When it comes to the actual frequencies of a rifle shot, handgun shot, or shotgun blast the attenuation is significantly better than the NRR implies.
>>
I used to use HLs but they're trash when shooting a rifle. Got the Peltors from a friend for my birthday and they stay sealed on my ear, also the adjustable volume level is nice. They're really awesome headsets for people who actually shoot a lot
>>
>>34431045
PROTIP: turn the volume up all the way and use plugs anyway, the combined NRR is like 41 or so and you can still hear everything
>>
>>34428767
>>eeeeeeeee stops
finally, silence
>>
>>34431160
What's the frequency range for common gunshots?
Are there uncommon gunshots that only dogs can hear that shooting earpro doesn't work as well against?
>>
>>34434247
Don't be retarded, regular hearing protection headsets for noisy work environments are also NRR rated and that's what the NRR rating was originally designed for. Things like airplanes and construction equipment generate a lot of noise in lower frequency ranges than gunshots.

Anyways centerfire handguns typically generate peak sonic energy at around 1 kHz and intermediate caliber rifles usually peak between 1.5 kHz and 2 kHz, where most electronic headsets have ~30 dB attenuation.
>>
>>34427092
Nobody kits up when they heat their hot pocket you NEET fuck.
>>
Honestly why dont you just use in-ear plugs?

Muffs were never as comfortable or effective.

I guess the HL's are good for doubling up, at least..?

I used to always have earplugs but recently bought an HL Impact Sport for 60 bucks, only because in SHTF it's a lot faster to put it on your head than plug-in your ears.

I was absolutely amazed when trying them that you actually hear -better- than without them!

But reading this thread, I'm wondering if I shouldn't have bought a higher end one. Plus I don't like the seal on my current HL Impact Sport.

Is the difference in hearing distant small noises THAT better?

>>
>>34427614
Shooting a .357 indoors is terrible loud.

Shooting a .357 down the hall knocked the pictures off the walls and dust came down from the ceiling. Ear Pro for the win.... the guys without the ear pro were unable to communicate due to hearing loss and bailed.
>>
>>34428380
This.

It reminds me of all the concerts I've gone to, all the guns I've shot, and all the time I worked on the ambulance.

Seriously. Sirens are loud AF up close.
>>
>>34437835
If they're low profile at the bottom enough to actually shoulder your rifle how you want, then yes.
>>
>>34427025
>Why is this shit so expensive
Because they know that vietnam war reenactors and wanna-be MSF cosplayers will still buy it.
>>
The HL lift when aiming with a rifle. Also shit is hotter and more uncomfortable to wear for a few hours. Also they don't fit well under a helmet Ice tried it.

All that said, I rock the electronic ear plugs most of the time from M3. Full charging kit, comfortable, light, doesn't get in my way with gear. Only complaint is they don't pick up bass perfectly but fuck it. For the advantages it's worth it. Even if they break then they act as regular ear plugs too which I don't see happening anytime soon but haven't fully stress tested them yet.
