The Ostfront was too long and too far from home.

They depended on horses and their supply chain couldnt keep up with the pace of operations.

Later on it was compounded further on Hitlers refusal to allow tactical retreats in order to save the strategic situation. The 6th army in Stalingrad relied on air supply becuse hitler would not allow a breakout to be attempted.

Basically blame Hitler for everything that went wrong after the failed assault on moscow

Not invade the Soviet Union and finish off the brits in order to force a truce. Also, try to keep the US and its economy out of the war. Once those conditions were met Germany could have focused 100% on the Soviet Union and eastern europe.

If, for example, they had done more to create a Russian Liberation Army from the millions of Soviet POWs they had after the summer of 1941, they could have had a lot better chance of beating Stalin.

Gehlen did exactly that. He stood up a few battalions of local volunteers for LRRP-style missions behind the lines. That whole thing got shut down when senior Nazi leadership found out they were actually using untermensch to vight for der vaterland.

If Hitler had listened to Gehlen, Germany probably would have won in the east.
