Not sure how the house you're moving into was built, but in the US of A, most door frames are built from 1×4's.

You'd have to prove they were there to kill you (so a threat before hand) or someone else (IE they're shooting up someones home), or you had to act with immediate force in order to prevent being killed (IE you were already stabbed at this point).

I know someone who had their farm broken into by pikeys so he acted accordingly, he fired a warning shot, which they ran upon hearing this.

If he had shot and killed one that was found unarmed then he was using unjustifiable force,

This is true. Isolated farms and dwellings are a target for burglary, because city-dwelling criminals have cars. Most of the time they'll wait until you are away (vacations and the like) and then toss your place.

Pick a small town instead with neighbours nearby. Make friends, help out in your neighbourhood and get known. When neighbours go on vacation, make sure you check on their houses- you can offer to do things like water their garden or whatever.
