Is there anything a straight bolt offers over a bent bolt?

General bolt action rifle thread.

Easier manipulation for the trade off of not being able to use a scope, although you could use a scout mount or do what they did in bf1
>>
>>34398768
>easier manipulation
Idk. It seems like the curved bolt gives you more leverage than a straight bolt.

It can only give you more leverage if it's longer.
>>
>>34398757
I doubt that anyone on /k/ really has experience in this, but what are some good custom rifle makers the work on controlled feed actions and cost around 5-8 grand? If they offer a mannlicher stock, that would be a big plus!

It depends on the rotation angle. I always find it awkward when cycling the bolt on my Mosin because the bolt throw is 90 degrees at points straight up. It doesn't feel any different whether I grasp the bolt with my palm facing up or down.

Curved bolts, such as a Mauser, are much more comfortable to manipulate and can be done with your fingers rather than your palm.
>>
Does anyone have any experience with mauser m12 rifles? I was thinking about getting a rifle that deserves the title "Raifu".

Am I the only one obsessed with Bavarian carbines/Stutzen?
>>
I can shoot left handed easier
>>
>>
>>34399307
No you are not. The Bavarian Carbines make my pickle tickle!
>>
>>34398757

Better leverage. In adverse conditions, or when you've got a sticky case (And back in the day a cartridge bursting or splitting was more common), a straight bolt gives you more of a mechanical advantage.

Plus they're simpler to make.

>>34398810
You can grasp a straight bot with your whole hand, that's a lot more leverage than you can apply to a bent bolt, especially during the initial turn.

Any good gunsmith will be happy to build you a 5-6k rifle to your specs. Notice I say good gunsmith, look around and find a reputable guy. It wont be a regular jerkoff at your LGS but probably someone across the country amd the rifle could take a year to build.
>>
>>34400163
Any recommendations? Like I want to support a good gunsmith. Anyone know a good brosmith? I mean custom rifles are pretty much what gunsmiths live for right? At least the ones that enjoy their job.
>>
>>34400245
I mean sure, like 80% of gunsmiths live for making a custom ar.
>>
>>34398757
Straight bolts are typically less gay

Is anyone else's mosin have a retarded bayonet that kicks out to one side like that?

I know it's supposed to mount on the side, but I mean angled away like that.
>>
>>34398757
If you turn the rifle 90 degrees to the left and set it on a flat surface, you can align your asshole on the bolt and stimulate your prostate.
>>
>>34401344
Someone got stabbed with your bayonet. You are one step closer to creating a geist! Now you need to shoot someone to death with it and bash someones head in with the stock and you will have your qt Russian raifu.
>>
>>34398757
Easier to operate in the thick mittens in hard winter conditions.

As a lefty, it sure makes it easier for me as I don't have to reach all the way around the rifle to manipulate the bolt.
Honestly gunmakers of the late 19th and early 20th century probably just didn't figure that having an uninturrupted sight picture while reloading was an advantage. The doctrine at the time wasn't really suited for the type of warfare that came about in WW1 and WW2.
>>
>>34398757

>Why Straight Bolt?
Easier Manufacture
Easier Gross Manipulation (gloved hands etc)
Can whack it against something if frozen shut
Can use larger, rounder knob allowing for more purchase on bolt handle

>>34401344

Early bayonets were side mounted so you could get to the ramrod. They were offset like the Mosin's so you could use the ramrod without poking yourself.

With breach loading this became silly so most armies ditch the pointing away part, but kept them on the side for cleaning rods. Then they realized that ruined shot placement laterally when fixing or removing bayonet, so they put them under the barrel.

The Russians, however, just remembered bayonets were supposed to be sideways and point away. Or they thought since it was supposed to be mounted like 98% of the time that they might as well leave it where you can use the cleaning rod with it attached.
>>
>>34398757
Easier manipulation, easier to kick it open if it jams/freezes.

Aren't mosin's barrel harmonics fucked if you don't have bayonet on?

absolutely.
>>
>>34407561
>Aren't mosin's barrel harmonics fucked if you don't have bayonet on?
No. The harmonics are different, which means point-of-impact changes relative to point-of-aim whether you have the bayonet affixed or not. Only the Russians sighted them in with the bayonet on anyway; other users did not.

>what are side mounted scopes

My mosin bolt was so tight I had to smack it from below with an open palm or it wouldn't work
>>
>>34398757
Always assumed it was for manufacturing reasons (simpler to make) and for use with gloves (hell of a lot easier to use with thick winter gloves on)
>>
can someone give me an overview or guide on hunting rifle prices and brands? my gun area of interest is mostly milsurp but one of my friends relatives is selling of a bunch of "boltaction hunting rifles" for 500 each. was going to check em out probably pick one. just want a rough idea of what stuff costs. dont want to end up picking an axis for 500 when theres a nice Remington 700 or whatever next to it for the same price.
just want to know the names of common fudd guns and rough pricing.

Can't be called homophobic if your shooting a straight.
