/out/ is so slow and not very helpful,

Im in the store for a medium sized pack axe, but i cant shell out $150 for one,

I was looking at condors Cloudburst axe, are they quality?

Im open to more suggestions from other companies bc im not very Axe savvy
>>
>>34392404

Why not just get an Estwing and call it good?
>>
>>34392436
Im really feeling a wood handle axe, thats really it,
>>
>>34392404
I hear cold steel is the best out there.
>>
>>34392404

For splitting, felling, or both?

If for splitting, consider re-profiling the head to be thinner, or buying a Condor Greenland instead. However, I also unironically recommend Fiskars axes too. I think they're ugly as hell, but they're strong and light enough to be tied right on to a ruck.

If for felling, consider a saw as well.

Some people will say Condor is a shit company, but they don't know what they're talking about. There's a lot of confusion on /k/ between Condor Tool and Knife and Condor Tactical, which is is actually a shit gear company.

That boutique shit is honestly nonsense. If you're handy enough to need an axe, you should be handy enough to buy a hardware store axe, grind it nice and sharp, and strip the varnish if you absolutely must be that autistic.

Paying more than 30 bucks for an axe is nonsense. Cheap ones hold an edge more than well enough for 99% of real world use.

If you want wood, you may as well shell out for a Gransfors Bruks or similar. Otherwise a little Estwing or the Fiskars polymer handle hatchets are great for the money. Honestly, as long as you know your way around a sharpening stone and the profile of the head is pretty close to what you want, any axe will work fine.
>>
Hultafors make great axes that wont break the bank,
>>
>>34392660
its mainly for both, i have a sven 15 inch, but i feel like a little redundancy for shelter making cant hurt,
i feel like the Hudson bay pattern axes are flawed and become loose faster than others, im not sure if its true, i just heard it around if you have experience with them i would love to hear about them
>>
Council Tools Boy's Axe has treated me pretty well. Think I paid $30 for it.
>>
>>34392720

Hudson bay pattern is intrinsically weaker since it has half the bearing surface on the wood.

I've made a bunch out of full size heads, and if they're really tightly hung its not an issue, but when they come loose they become unusable faster than traditional axes, which can dangle almost forever.
>>
>>34392704
Sound advice.
>>
>>34392404
I wouldn't think about it too much OP. I've got a little hatchet my father gave to me when I was a kid and its served me well until now. Just a basic steel head and hickory handle. Just make sure to keep whatever you get clean and sharp and it'll serve you well.
>>
>>34392404
Go buy a cheap axe head at a yard sale and rehandle it yourself.
>>
>>34392704
The scandinavian shaped axes are just a lot more useful for non-lumberjacks.

American pattern axes are meant for either felling trees or splitting logs and that's pretty much it, while the much thinner Swedish axes are honed razor sharp and can be used for everything from skinning game, food prep, wood carving, etc.

This.

Hultafors makes a great axe. Don't go for the medium sized axe, you really don't need that much axe in a pack, and you'll regret it when it comes time to carry it. Just get a bahco folding saw and small axe, unless you're actually planning on staying out in the middle of nowhere for a long ass time.

I ended up buying a gransfors bruk small forest axe, because I love the blade profile. It came from the factory decently sharp. The handle honestly does fit the hand very very well, and is really high quality. I wish I could get out with it more often.

If you end up liking the hultafors, great buy it. But I'm going to be honest when I tell you that gransfors makes really nice axes. If I were you I'd just save a little and buy the small forest axe, I waited to find a deal on mine because you had to back order all of them when I bought mine. Found one on amazon for 131$ shipped.

Check out Hultafors. Ive got a Husqvarna hatchet (made by hultafors) and i love it, it was only $50 AUD and i cant fault it. Its a little on the heavy side though, really more of a small axe.

Why would you skin and cook with a fucking axe? Buy a knife for gods sake.
>>
>>34395430
Yeah, seriously.
Use the tool for its intended purpose.
Axe for wood, knife for game.
>>
Fiskers. Anything else is dumb and impractical. You are just going to use it for it's intended purpose of chopping wood. Why you would need a "combat" axe in this day in age is beyond me and just mall ninja shit
