So I've been thinking about steel plates/body armor and I was wondering why they don't make them with lips around the edges that prevent fragmentation from running right off the edges on the plates straight under your chin or right down into your dick?

https://youtu.be/JsNPmsdwM-I

I mean this guy demonstrates it pretty well, that even with the spall lining/coating that a lot of steel plates have, fragmentation (which he improperly refers to as spall) can go right through it, especially after multiple hits and especially at the seams. It seems like and incredibly easy solution to just have slightly rolled/raised edges that form almost like a ramp, directing the fragmentation (which doesn't have a lot of mass or energy behind it) away from the shooter immediate extremities. I mean, it would be a bit goofy ergonomics wise and you'd have to worry about the potential for damaging the spall lining but as long as the rolled areas aren't too sharp or the weight of the plate and spall lining aren't resting on them, it should cause too many issues. It just seems like an easy solution to one of the biggest problems with steel plates (the big one being weight).

Why not just have a full suit of steel armor?

This is generally what I'm talking about. The only problem of course is that most of the fragmentation is moving out at approximately a right angle from the point of impact, so with heavily curved plates it'd be a matter of having rolling out edges that are longer and thicker than the over all dimensions of the plate, given that the edges tend to be the areas furthest away from the curved/extruded portion of the plate.
>>
>>34377529
because that drastically increases the cost and cost is the only thing steel has going for it
>>
>>34377533
The spall liners already add a bunch of cost. I think people would pay an extra $50-70 per plate for a "premium" plate that doesn't castrate them.
>>
>>34377541
>>34377533
It would also help solve the issue that steel plates have where the thin edge of the plates wear on the spall lining which helps cause these fragmentation issues in the first place. Also they don't have to be the on the sides of the plates, just the top and bottoms. Could be as simple as welding on a milder/softer/cheaper steel to the edges since it's only dealing with the fragmentation and ideally has the right geometry that helps slow down the rounds.
>>
>>34377541
they're a cheap shit spray on coating. sometimes multilayered.
putting anything beyond that soft curve into the plate is going to add a bunch of cost.

the idiots who buy steel shit already don't give a fuck. it's like improving the quality of the garbage you can buy at dollar tree. they buy it because it's cheap garbage.
>>
>>34377657
>being able to take dozens of hits/reuse a plate is retarded
The only retarded thing is the weight. So sorry that we can't all afford $400 a plate that has to be replaced each time we accidentally drop it. The edge thing wouldn't add a bunch of cost. They could literally take their current plates and just weld this rolled edge piece for fragmentation protection on the edges (probably just top and bottom). It could be a cheaper softer steel since all it has to deal with is secondary impacts from fragmentation.

>So sorry that we can't all afford $400 a plate that has to be replaced each time we accidentally drop it
So don't drop it you fucking retard. Buy a dummy, you can carry it around and practice not dropping it.
>just weld
Confirmed for fucking retarded.

Yeah
>confirmed for retard
Oh, because the heat treat on the edge of the plate matters SOOO much, right?

Fucking lmao kid, you're really stretching, aren't you?

Or just buy dkx armor. Save up for it. It's level 4 rated but super light and it even floats. Steel and even ceramic armor are getting outdated.

You don't because it would shatter before bending enough due to the nature of hardened tool steel.

"6.2.3.3 Armor Drop Test"

Standalone Level 4 plates must resist drop testing in order to receive NIJ certification.

"muh fragile playtes" is literally a myth if you read any documentation about NIJ standards. Especially the standards for multi-hit capability.

Sorry AR500 fags, but your plates are 4x as heavy, and shoot spalling into the user's face.
