Has this terminology changed? I'm used to terminology demonstrated in this image, cocked and at rest. I've been seeing posts online referring to "hammer down" as being "cocked", and "hammer back" as "at rest".

Why did this change? This confuses me because when the hammer is back (cocked) it is lower than when it's at rest, so shouldn't *that* be called "hammer down"?

Seems like when the hammer is up it's called "hammer down". Am I wrong? Somebody please explain.

Your way is the least retarded so that's the way I'm gonna do it

I assume "down" refers to the position relative to the firing pin. It's "coming down" on the firing pin.

Consider also how the mechanism was positioned in older guns, say a flintlock or matchlock gun. There, to strike "down" makes more sense.

So I guess instead, the terminology has in fact been kept but the construction changed.

When telling you to decock your pistol before holstering, uspsa range masters say "hammer down." This is consistent with calling the firing process "dropping" the hammer.

But when you pull the hammer back to cock the weapon you're also pulling the hammer down in the process, so why is "hammer down" not referring to it being cocked?
>>

Wait, so "hammer down" means the hammer is resting against the firing pin, but "dropping" the hammer means shooting it? The fuck?

You were pulling the firing part of the hammer up.
>>
It's called "hammer down" because the resting state of the hammer is against the firing pin.

So just to confirm, "dropping" the hammer is the act of moving the hammer to the resting forward position? So if I were to clear a weapon and return the hammer to resting position against the firing pin, that is called "dropping" the hammer?

Correct.

Nah. A decocker safety would drop the hammer to.
