What are the advantages and disadvantages to using trenches in a modern war such as Syria or Ukraine?
Trenches and foxholes are still used extensively in Ukraine, but how effective are they and what is their purpose and tactical use?

they are stiff of great use if you have to defend a point
pro: they cover you from most flat trajectory weapons
cons: you obviously never dug a trench havent you?
digging holes to hide in will never not be useful
also they aren't tactical choices, they're strategic choices
get your buzzwords right
Trench warfare in the modern era is a sign that neither side is competent enough to execute offensives or regain the strategic initiative.
Modern air power and artillery makes them useless. Tunnels are a bit better. But...Fixed emplacements of any kind are a bad idea in a modern context.

why would they be obsolete? if some piece of artillery shell explodes near you, you're still better off in a trench or hole considering blast and shrapnell danger (exept for when you take a direct hit, in which case you're fucked anyway.)
not to speak of the fact that WWI artillery usage was propably even more destructive than what is in use today (dicke bertha, mustard gas, you name it)
The liveleak videos show them stopping MRAPs

As a primary means of defense, yes
As a temporary measure, no.

Mostly in modern warfare they are useful in keeping your enemy in a controled area for bombardment.

>Trench based warfare
You either have a PFC/Lcpl building sandbags. Or the Sea bees better be putting up hescos.
Welcome to modern warfare that isn't Call of Duty. We build sand walls, not dig into the dirt.

Napalm and cluster weapons? Im not even sure, just a guess

Because your current enemy doesn't use rocket and heavy artillery.

Somewhat related, tunnels. Tunnels are very effective when dealing with an enemy that has overwhelming firepower.
The japs used them against us, the vietcong used them against us, insurgents used them extensively in fallujah and we've seen them used a ton in cities fights in syria.
fucking tunnels man

I fucking hate Vice. Most of their current journalists are massive hipster faggots. Plus they are biased.

They are stupid enough to go to places where no sane journalist would go.
