I'm a noguns and I'm looking to buy my first AR-15 any advice on magazine type?
>>
>>34354175
I've never had issues with my GIs. People have been using PMAGs for a long time and I haven't heard much bad about them. Apparently Lancer5s are the best on the market.
>>
>>34354175
GI or Lancer, I like Lancers
>>
>>34354200
>>34354230
Thanks for the advice. I'm really liking the lancers, being able to see exactly how many rounds I have left is very nice. My only question is, are they as strong as steel mags, do they hold up as well?

Lancers, PMags, and anything steel (ASC, Brownells, Mako, Elander, OK Industries) are great.

Hexmag and ETS are pretty good but relatively new to the market. Mine have never let me down.

Stay away from promag and thermold.
>>
>>34354274
I have two thermold ar mags that work fine
>>
>>34354253
I haven't tried to torture mine but I've dropped them while fully loaded on the ground and had no issues, they also have steel feed lips which is a nice addition to a polymer mag, if you want maximum durability get the steel gi mags
>>
>>34354253
your standard usgi mag isnt steel its aluminum
>>
Here's a breakdown for you

GI Steel Mags - Reliable with modern follower, feed lips bend easy over time leading to reliability issues. They can be bent back, but most people are too fuddtarded.

Polymer - Hex, Lancer, Magpul only. AVOID: Troy Battlemag, promag etc. 100% polymer work fine in ARs (NOT AKs). The feed lips will critically fail and break before they bend, and last longer than GI mags before they reach reliability issues. But when they fail, they're fucked. "Steel re-enforced feedlip" mags - No bueno for AR15, feed lips will bend easier than all steel and you can't bend them back usually.

I recommend:

1. Lancer smoke transparent mags - Best in class durability, transparency is nice to have
2. Magpul windowed mags - Still see your ammo. Pick a generation that works with your rifle if you get an oddball bullbup
3. For strictly price, go either standard magpul or hexmag when on sale. I've sometimes seen a 10 pack bundle of either go for $99 free shipping at gun.deals

> I prefer polymer mags

You can't go wrong with PMAGs and I've had luck with Hexmags.
>>
just cause a mag is made of metal doesn't mean that metal is steel.
steel gi mags do not exist.
steel ar mags do exist but were never generally issued.
>>
>>34354448
"steel" rolls off the tongue easier than "metal" or "aluminimumium" so people just use the most brainless option. Quit being a technicality nazi
>>
>>34354495
see the problem here is there is a huge difference between steel and aluminum ar mags. in terms of weight and durability.
>>
>>34354274
>Hexmag
These mags are trash stick to pmags M3. I have my pmags for 5.56 and lancers for 300 blk

Ya no shit, but the only people who care are the autists here and the assholes stuck doing inventory. Absolutely everyone calls metal GI mags "steel mags", to the point where it can be considered a figure of speech. Language is fluid, it's a soft science. You understood what he meant, and that's what matters. Time to move on!
>>
>>34354594
Hexmags are not shit, they're equal to Pmags in durability tests you can find on youtube. Troy mags, for example, are shit. Drop one loaded with the "pull" floorplate and they explode. Hexmags can still function when shot and full of dirt, just like pmags and lancers.

But I agree with separating mags for 300blk and 5.56, good choice

well since this is a mag thread...lets talk about the old mil pmag ban that still going on?

HK making weird magwells so they can sell their mags?

Steel mag suppliers in the mil industry bitching ?

gunners and generals not having a piece of action in the mag supply so ban them?

For me it wasn't until that m27 got fielded every snco had a bitch fit about pmags.
>>
>>34354175
20 rounder GI mags
>>
>>34354600
might as well call promags pmags then since every polymer mag is by default a pmag to idiots
>>
>>34354612
>Hexmags
I don't think mine is that good or it just doens't feel that solid plus I can't see my ammo.

Thank you on the separating support
>>
>>34354633
But no, because people don't often refer to promags as pmags. If they did, en masse, then the two words would be interchangeable. See how language works, mr technicality?
>>
>>34354627
noticed that they only come curved now in pmags. Why is that?

Easier to manufacture? more reliable than straight 20s?
>>
>>34354657
20rnd pmags were a proprietary design, probably just built from the ground up. There is a certain sexiness to the 20rnd steel mags tho

just acquire all the mags you can. i have GI's and pmags, both are great. and i guess PSA 9mm stick mags for my ((pistol)). i would buy whatever i come across at a decent price.
>>
>>34354657
>more reliable than straight 20s?
this
im sure easier to manufacture plays a big part but the pmag straight 20s reliability was questionable. majority would workfine but there were numerous reported issues.
>>
OKay brand aluminum mags are really the only thing you should be buying.

Note that gen3 pmags are what the military is switching to.

GI or Pmag.

I use both, and don't have shit to talk about either.

GIs are lighter, but pmags feel better in my hand.

Stay away from fagboy brands like promag.

My sig 556 came with a USGI mag. I've literally never touched it.
>>
>>34354175
both work look up para cord for GI mags, buy new GI mags, Pagpul will last longer though
>>
>>34354909
That's not to say that it's bad, I was just cleaning out my gun room earlier today and noticed something metallic rattling around in a box. Realized I had this mag I'd never noticed. I use pmags and lancers.
>>
My only issue with Hexmags was I got one that won't drop free to save its life.my PMags, 20rd GI and other Hexmag magazines all drop free in my AR except this one Hexmag.

If I could figure out where it's tight I would do a little sanding, but I just can't tell.
>>
>>34355012
you could paint the mag well with inletting black and sand the areas of the mag that come out with the ink on them.
>>
>>34355012
I would email the guys at Hexmag about your problem magazine. They may just send you a replacement.

I've heard that the very first run of Hexmags had issues, but Hexmag fixed damn near all of them in the first revision. The Series 2 Hexmags have all of the changes made in Series 1, in addition to added improvements.
>>
The GI magazines are a little less bulky, but it's just enough so you can't fit 3 pmags into old m16 pouches.

But they aren't available with windows.
>>
>>34355012
>GI mags drop free
>Pmags drop free
>better sand it so some no-name polymer magazine that resides in the bargain bin will drop free

Think hard anon.

Never generally, but HK steel magazines were issued with 416s to whoever was using those.

You're retarded.
>>
>>34354200

Me neither.

Most of the problems people had with their mags came from worn springs and bent feeder lips, which are pretty easy to detect.

Ignore the autism. Lancer L5 mags are the bee's knees.

Dunno why there's any love for Hex mags. They just feel like they're made of fisher price plastic while when you pick up a Pmag you know its bombproof fiber-reinforced shit.

Phone posting, sorry for the grammar here.

HK416 magwells were already tight.
M27 was a fucking travesty of watered down requirements that would have outright disqualified Colt and HK.
IAR trials dropped open bolt capability, ability to take drum magazines, extended magazines or "aftermarket" magazines in general.
Other Marines are supposed to pass ammunition to this automatic rifle gunner.
Surprise Surprise, the Pmag Gen 1 and 2 didn't fit well in the HK416.
M27 magwell is designed only for HK steel high reliability magazine.
Early Pmags aren't compatible. Pmag Marines can't feed M27.
Marines consider banning all Pmags as a result.
Magpul scrambles and shits out the gen 3 Pmag.
It works enough to lift the ban.

Considering that for awhile we had 3 generations of Pmag in 6 years... Imagine if Magpul didn't get their shit together and we ended up having to update our magazines every 2 years like phones.
>>
>>34359215
>only HK mags work
>not STANAG
Sorry that the Euro's can make mags that aren't garbage, but PMags are superfluous to good GI mags.
