For areas where large carnivores might be present, I carry a 44 magnum with a 8 inch barrel. You need a gun that can stop a bear. If you don't like wheel guns, then a 10mm is a great choice as well.

Big horn armory now makes a lever action 500S&W. Naturally this is going to be able to handle somewhat higher pressure than a revolver so you can load it quite hot and I do believe they make 700 grain bullets for this particular cartridge.
