My first rifle was a scar-17, no regrets, just save up for it and buy it. But you will want to have a lot of extra money for good attachments, it eats up sights not made for .308. I love this rifle

I'm conflicted about 556 vs 308...
i like the idea of using pmags which I already own and having cheap ammo. but everyone says the scar really shines in 308.however the gun is about $500 more, ammo costs more and proprietary mags are a big turn off. is it really worth the bigger dip? most of the arguments for 308 turn into muh SHTF fantasies.
also is $2500/3000 a reasonable price these days?

1.2 1000 rounds of practice ammo
1.3 100 rounds of carry ammo shoot 50 for test
1.4 CCW holster

Scar 17s was my first gun. IMO it's not a great first gun, the recoil is much higher than an AR. It's just a lot of gun. I don't regret owning it at all though.
