for my first rifle i want to get the scar 17s, or should i start with an AR and move up from there?
>>
If you have the money get whichever. They are both pretty much the same
>>
>>34353640
It depends
1. Do you have money left over for a quality optic?
2 money left over for plenty of ammo?

If yes to both. Get the SCAR if not, save easily 1.5k for a good quality AR build and spend the rest on ammo and optics.
>>
>>34353640
I have one, I wouldnt recommend it for a first rifle, get an AR and practice before you go full autistic and buy a SCAR. I would rather wreck a honda civic than a BMW if I was learning to drive on my first car
>>
>>34353640

ITT OP has too much money, knows nothing about guns and is going to buy his COD favourite as a first, despite it being a terrible first gun.

Get a 10/22 and move up from there.
>>
>>34355466
it's hard to wreck a SCAR. You REALLY have to try.
>>
>>34355544
>despite it being a terrible first gun.
confirmed for poorfag who's never shot a SCAR side by side with an AR10 and is just jelly of OP's moneyz.
>>
>>34355646
Not him, but the Scar 17 is a great gun. However, I wouldn't recommend it as a starting gun.
>>
>>34355646

I didn't say the SCAR was a terrible gun, I said it was a terrible first gun.

I have shot a SCAR side by side with an AR, I rate my own AR as slightly better but I totally agree the SCAR is a great gun.

It's just a terrible first gun.

My first rifle was a scar-17, no regrets, just save up for it and buy it. But you will want to have a lot of extra money for good attachments, it eats up sights not made for .308. I love this rifle

Why move up when you can be up already? The only 'bad' part is how you have no zero to base how good the rifle is unless you go and buy a worse gun.
>>
>>34353640
yeah just get a scar now. you're going to spend that much on other guns only to realize you still want the scar.

Can't say I have, but it's really amusing when there's a guy with a bolt action .308 next to me because the factory muzzle break is a beast. When you fire the gun it makes a big blast then the people next to you immediately look over. But I do know the recoil on this gun is one of the best for .308
>>
>>34353722
This OP, I got a stupid gun as my first, no rugrats. I still love my 10mm vector
>>
Why not the best of both worlds and get a Larue OBR, damn thing is a 762 or 556 that gets a .5 moa out of the box, and it's built on the AR platform
>>
>>34353640
Get the Scar 17
>>34355544
Fuck off poorfag
>>
SCAR's are clunky and too heavy. They are very bulky guns, I know a lot of people that hate them. Get a good quality AR.
>>
I'm conflicted about 556 vs 308...
i like the idea of using pmags which I already own and having cheap ammo. but everyone says the scar really shines in 308.however the gun is about $500 more, ammo costs more and proprietary mags are a big turn off. is it really worth the bigger dip? most of the arguments for 308 turn into muh SHTF fantasies.
also is $2500/3000 a reasonable price these days?
>>

>>34355544
>get 10/22 and move up from there
I never understood this meme. Sure the 10/22 is a fine rifle and it fits its role well but a first rifle? Maybe for a younger kid who needs to learn basic saftey and functions. For an adult though a 10/22 teaches you nothing about recoil. Imagine shooting a red rider bb gun and then thinking you know what to expect from a real rifle.

Go to the range and rent both.

You'll know whether or not you like the SCAR or not very quickly.

I've sold at least 4 people on it just by letting them squeeze of a mag or two.... and one guy got turned off when he tried to use a magwell grip even after I warned him to keep his thumb down.
>>
>>34353640
Get an ar
Cheaper
More accurate
More parts

Here's my future build
Gibbz arms g10 lower and upper combo
X caliber ar10 heavy barrel 5r rifling 1/7 twist melonite 4140 or 416r steel
Kak industries double ejector bcg
Drd tactical quick change barrel system
Some pistol buffer tube kit and sig brace
Some lower parts kit, you can get a math trigger If you wish
Total cost is like 1800 or almost half and you get a nonrecip side charger with amazing accuracy and durability with lots of after market parts and many different caliber options for Iike 1100 less with a quick change barrel system.
You can spend the rest on a optic or a suppressor if you wish.
>>
>>34353640

I had a BB gun till I was a teen, then I inherited a couple bolt action 22's. Didn't "upgrade" until late 20's. Starting with a SCAR17 is like...what!?
I mean go for it if you want but I would find it really weird if I met someone who was like, "Hey I just bought my first rifle and it's a SCAR17". I'd go, "Cool. But why?"
I say do it if you have the dough. It's a lot of people's "dream" battle-rifle. It's cool as fuck no two ways about it. You're going to get a lot of jealous-fags in this thread or people who want to steer you their way. I'm jelly. But I mean...I guess get it and shoot the fuck out of it. Take a marksman class or something? I say go for it but don't be surprised if you get a lot of stink faces and eye-brow razing. I wouldn't sit and brag about it constantly to gun-fudds. They'll think you're a massive douche. But whatever, it's for your enjoyment. Get after it potential-new-gun-fag. I salute you.

Assuming self-defense here is your acquisition list, in order.

1. Compact 9mm handgun.
1.1 Night Sights.
1.2 1000 rounds of practice ammo
1.3 100 rounds of carry ammo shoot 50 for test
1.4 CCW holster
1.5 Extra mags bump up if expensive or hard to find them.
1.6 Light if using for HD if not skip

2.0 Medical training.
2.1 CCW training where you actually draw from the holster.

3. Magazine-fed rifle in 5.56 or 7.62x39.
3.1 5.56 is the best at HD
3.2 GET A FUCKING LIGHT IF USING FOR HOME DEFENSE
3.3 A magazine of good home defense ammo.
3.3.1 M193 is fine for HD
3.4 Practice ammo 1000 to shoot 1000 for rainy days
3.5 Sling stick with a two point
3.6 Lots of extra mags 20 is a good base.
3.7 Optic red dot is best but nothing more than 4x power
>>
>>34357927

>more accurate

Wrong desu

SCAR Is more accurate, especially with accurization kids, than an AR with equivalent kits.
>>
>>34357175
If its your first and only gun you will ever get, 556 is fine, but I and everyone else will look at you funny for shelling out battle rifle money for carbine rifle caliber. If you really want a gun in 5.56 just get an AR15 (seriously they are like 400-600 dollars right now) and get a SCAR 17 in 308 later.
>>
This thread is close enough to the one I want to make so I'll butt in.

I want a precise 5.56 rifle with a folding stock, right now I'm thinking a CZ 805 Bren S1 is my best choice, followed by a SCAR 16S. What do you guys think?

>>
>>34358108

>Bren

Why would you buy the civilian version of a rifle that has already being replaced by the 806 because it was a piece of shit?

You could at least wait until CZ brings the 806 version over so that you're not completely fucking up.

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2015/10/12/cz-announces-cz-806-bren-2-improved-modular-assault-rifle/

>Already in 2011, the first CZ 805 went with Czech soldiers to Afghanistan, where the weapon was tested in combat conditions. That testing also revealed problems in childhood, modified in real time by specialists sent from the country. Complained about the high price of weapons, a very large mass, poor ergonomics, as well as the bad balance of the gun during firing. CZ 805 first series production also had a very long, steady flask with uncomfortable cheek pad. Soldiers also drew attention to the negative shaped handle and tensioning levers switch. Worse yet, in contrast to almost all modern construction, the cocking lever would not stop in a rear position after using all of the cartridges in the magazine.

Of course there's no guarantee of the 806 won't have problems of its own that need time to get worked out. Just par for the course when your customers are the beta testers.
>>
>>34358108
>precision
>5.56

Choose one. 5.56 ballistics are just not making it out much farther than several hundred meters, and certainly aren't killing things. CZ Brens are great range guns but terrible innawoods guns for reasons found >>34358130

If you want precision you need to go at least to .308, but more likely into the 6mm or bigger lapua, creedmor, etc.
>>
>>34353640
i'd get a scar in .308

because the SCAR tax isn't as big of a jump from a quality ar-10

but the scar tax on 556 is like 4x?

The HK tax on the MR556 is worse.

>>
>>34355911
I'm going to defend this statement before the SCAR fags get in here. It is absolutely possible to build an AR10 that is better for you. The SCAR is a great rifle out of the box, but I wouldn't buy a 2500 dolla rifle just to go crazy modifying it when for 2500 you can build a phenomenal AR10 that's designed around the shooter.
>>
>>34357927

What?
An AR, some 5.56, and a bunch of AR-15 accessories plus a SCAR, some 7.62, and a bunch of SCAR accessories is more expensive than a SCAR, some 7.62, and a bunch of SCAR accessories alone.
You save money in the long run by just buying the gun you actually want to begin with.
