Why do peep sights like pic related seem to "click"

Why do peep sights like pic related seem to "click" with most people? They're so common in most western-designed guns.

You'd think that the open pistol-type sights would be better since you wouldn't have to estimate bullet drop on the front sight post, but somehow the peep sights seem to work better even though they seem more psychologically complex to use.

Even at 100 meters you still get results like pic related with fucked up alignment. They're pretty foolproof.
>>
I have never understood them.
Regards a Slav iron sights and optics user.
>>
I've read it leads to quicker sighting because of how vision works, and a quick glance and wikipedia tells me some crap about eye magic and parallax suppression
>>
>>34349518
The fact that block out liget from they except the target means that they will literally magnify the image, correct poor vision, and even nullify astigmatism
>>
>>34349518
>Psychologically complex to use
They're really not. Your brain is going to naturally want to put the top of the post in the center of the ring, and to center the ring on your point of aim. Notch-and-post sights require more active thought and training to use.
>>
>>34349553
A couple centimetres of drift on the sights translates to a pretty noticible difference in poi.

They "click" with most people because they are easy to use. You have only the front sight post to focus on rather than lining up the rear and mack sights.

Same, I've always been a better shot with regular notch and post sights

>peep sights seem to work better even though they seem more psychologically complex to use.

They're really not to hard to use. Just remember: focus on the front sight. Even slavsights are easier to shoot if you keep this in mind.

Don't even "try" to go for sight alignment. Just think of the peep as being the thing you have to look through in order to see the front post. Your mind should just be focused on the task of "see the front post".

If you're out of alignment with a small peep, you won't be able to see the front post correctly. For example, in >>34349553, if you were that far out of alignment with a small peep, you're not going to be able to see those "wings" if you're that far out of alignment.

If you're using a large peep, who cares...you're shooting under 100m in the dark anyway.

So psychologically, it just boils down to "look at the front sight and make sure you can actually see it". If you get those two things right, you're in sight alignment.

Another anon here; I still don't get it. I need to find a video explaining this or something.

what don't you get?
>>
>>34351719

You are aiming through the rear peep into the front sight. There are no lines to straighten out like on a traditional open sight equipped rifle.

What did he mean by this?

he's talking about how they occlude light from everything except the target. Same principle as with pinhole magnifiers.

Is there a reason why the front wings curve outward?
Why are there so few sights where they are totally vertical?
>>
>>34351830
Easier to discern which one is the front aperture
>>
>>34350757
No peep sight is able to adjust anywhere close to a couple centimeters.

Because they're very intuitive.
>>
If you're actually interested, it's also related to the pinhole camera.

Basically, looking through a pinhole has optical illusion phenoma attached to it. The main one is that it's harder to gauge depth perception. Which for your purposes is a plus as your eye isn't focusing on the target, on the front post, on the target again. They're close to being on the same optical plane. Put post on target and presssssss.
>>
I find that my AR points more naturally than any other gun I've shot. All I need to do is shrug my shoulders and the sights are right where I need them to be. That's why I chose it for my home defense gun.
>>
>>34351590
I actually find the peep sights easier to use since I have a hard time seeing the front post using the slav sights. But otherwise I have trouble doing elevation adjustments using nothing but the post (no physically moving the sight) whereas with the slav sights all I have to do is slide the rear.

No, no, I get that part. Zeroing and holding over just don't compute when I read it. I'm a great shot and aim naturally but when I try to understand what I'm doing my brain is pic related

>But otherwise I have trouble doing elevation adjustments using nothing but the post (no physically moving the sight) whereas with the slav sights all I have to do is slide the rear.

Cool.

AR Sights do this too with the rear sight.

When you zero with an A2 setup (and I'm being AR specific because that's where my firsthand knowledge is), you make your elevation ZERO adjustments on the front post, just like with slavsights.

Windage zero is done with the rear, but you don't touch the elevation knob on the rear after you've set it to the zero position. When you zero, and when you fire for a "battle sight", you make sure the rear sight elevator is set to 6/3. As you turn towards "up", you'll see marks for "4", "5" etc...these are hundred meter marks, just like the slavshit vernier slider.

The elevation knob on the rear sight is for doing exactly what you're talking about: setting elevation for different ranges.
>>
>>34353783
>Zeroing and holding over

you zero with

>rear sight set to 6/3 elevation
>adjust elevation only from the front post
>adjust windage from the rear sight
>zero using the small peep, not the big

for holdover, follow >>34354778

I'm going to regret this, but...
