How long until we see active protection for individual infantry? And what would it look like?
Be as sci-fi as you want.
Hard mode: No lasers (or at least explain where the power is coming from ffs)

Probably never. Shaped explosives are still explosives. Its the same reason (smart) people dont detonate Claymores while standing right behind them, just because the primary force and shrapnel is directed in a particular direction doesn't mean that there isn't substantial blast in all other directions. The last thing you want is to strap a bunch if mini ones to your chest.

Easiest answer I can think of would be when power armor comes into use. If it ever does. Mostly because you'd have more mass/armor to absorb the backblast of said active protection as well as a larger platform to base it on. Plus muscle assistance so it wouldn't burden the soldier. Plus if you already have the computing power to run the armor it wouldn't be that difficult to run the active protection alongside it.
