I'm looking for a good ol' rifle for camping, bushcraft, and hiking.
I need a rifle that:
>Isn't mad of polymer
>Has a 10 - 5 round ammo capacity
>Is either Bolt action or Semi Auto (no lever guns)
>Short (less than a meter)
>legal in all 50 states
>Inexpensive (I plan on camping and hiking with it)
>Fires inexpensive ammo
>Lightweight
>Could put down a bear (if absolutely necessary)
>Is extremely reliable

This rifle might not exist, but I still have my hopes up.
>>
Tikka M65A.
>>
>>34334813
Tikka, Winchester model 70, and CZ 557 all meet those criteria. 270 Winchester is the best cartridge. 308 is OK too.
>>
>>34334813
Why not a levergun?

Sounds perfect for what you want.

your going to have to deal with polymer, wood makes the price jump.(if its good wood) and you wont be hurt when your hurt you polymer.
>Ruger M77
>Mossberg MVP/Scout
>Steyr Scout(the best on the list).
>savage model 11
This is pretty much the bee knees if you want bolt action rifle.

If not you might as well get a AK or AR.

if you still want wood you can get a custom stock.
>>
>>34334813
I have a Mini 14 ranch rifle. I don't know if it's legal in all states but I don't see why it wouldn't be. It's got wood furniture, is semi-auto, and is fun to shoot. Also, if you put in .223 you won't have to spend too much.

it's actually on par with 7.62x51 using 147 grain.

.308 hunting rounds actually match or out perform 7.62x54 hunting rounds.
I like both.

>>
>>34339474
Well to be fair, .308 has a much wider selection of ammo to pick from here in the US.

With 7.62x54R hunting ammo, what you see is what you get. It's not bad, but there's not much of a selection.

It's similar to how 9x18 is better than .380, yet .380 has a much wider variety of ammo to pick from. Some that even outperform the average 9x18 load, simply because no one (aside from Underwood and Buffalo Bore) have bothered trying to make something special for 9x18.

Your main problem with specifications here is that I don't know what you're carrying it for. Do you want to hunt with it? Or just Defense? If hunting, are you wanting big or small game? What kind of bears (blacks vs grizzlies)? Are you thinking defense against hostile humans?

The suggestion of looking into the scout rifle concept is good. For small light cartridges that can punch above their weight, look at the 6.5 family. Creedmore is popular but the Swede is often used as an all around hunting gun. If you want to take rabbit and bear defense, you need to practice on your follow up shots with a bolt action and look into reloading to have specialized ammo.

>>
>>34341385
Although 7.62x39 does do a lot more damage to a person compared to a 5.45 round, 5.45 is better at penetration. If you want to kill a bear the most popular way is to shoot through the bears thick skull.

That rifle doesn't exist. You get very close with an old Ruger .44 Carbine. 4+1 semiauto, 16" barrel, wood, internal tube mag. It will reliably put all 5 in one big hole at 50 yards with Hornady LeveRevolution rounds. It's light, and doesn't kick badly, but has tons of muzzle flip. It is fully compliant with all AWBs. It looks exactly like a standard wood 10/22, just has a fatass barrel. They are also a bitch to fine, since they've been discontinued. Gunbroker gouges for them; watch LGS used racks.

A version with a removable 4 round rotary mag also exists, and looks like a Mini-14. Pic related.

For an innawoods gun especially in dense forest a scout rifle is perfectly adequate.
>>
>>34339936
are you implying bear attacks have been more prevalent as of late?
>>
>>34344272
2 people died in Alaska from bear attacks this month
>>
>>34344272
3 different attacks in alaska just last week, 4 dead. A 16 year old jogger, a miner in a mining camp, and 2 woman attacked together who tried bear spray to zero effect.

black bears are stepping their game up
>>
>>34334813
So you need an SKS to go innawoods with.
>isn't made of polymer
>legal in 50 states
>semi auto
>short
>inexpensive
>fires inexpensive ammo
>weight is opinionated decide for yourself or just stop being a little bit helps about it
>can kill bears
>reliable as they come

how the fuck did you come to /k/ where "grab sks, go innawoods" has been a motto for YEARS and not think "oh hey I probably need an sks"?

Holy shit man.

Agreed. SKS is the goto here and its not super expensive.
>>
>>34344337
>>34344405
>>34344431
But theres still faggots on /out/ that get triggered when people say bear spray has a record of being inneffective.

Sounds like my 30.06. Not that I'd suggest a 30.06 if you were buying new, but it's perfectly serviceable.

So weird that I was looking at survival shelters this week and get that reference. I need to make a video myself as they ones I've seen wouldn't be great in the winter.

bear spray has >92% effective usage, so youre right in saying it has a record of not being effective, but its better odds than fumbling with a magnum revolver and hoping you aimed right
>>
Can a woodsmaster 742 be made into a reliable weapon?
Only ever shot one in .243.
Was basically a single shot.
>>
>>34344816
Wow, what a fag. You know those numbers are inflated by liberals and the ACTUAL number for AGGRESSIVE bears is like 15%?

I have on in 30-06. It was my grandpa's. I haven't shot it a lot, and I haven't ever had problems with it. My dad said my grandpa used it for years and years to hunt deer and never had an issue with it. But, that weird bolt design is extremely prone to getting stuff in it. I don't know how much I'd trust it. Plus, it recoils like a son of a bitch. Not a fun gun to shoot.

If I had the same needs as OP minus the short, lightweight, bear thing, and for self defense too, what should I get?

Either a 12 gauge shotgun or a basic ar15 will work best

If the only thing I'm allowed to own in semi auto is .22 (i know...) and shotguns are really expensive here, I am fucked right?
>>
>>34347798
I would say SKS but you probably heard that a million times before. Maybe a kel tec sub 2000, ar 7, yugo mauser.
>>
>>34347890
You could always look at lever-action rifles if you have access to those. If not then that only leaves bolt-actions.
Not saying you can't use a bolt action for self defense, you can always train yourself to use irons or a red dot and work up your speed on working the bolt.

>No iron sights

I, however, would suggest it.
>>
What about a Mas 49/56 rifle? It's lightweight, shoots 7.5 french, semi auto, and kinda short.
>>
>>34343973
Integrated bipod was a major selling, point for the state scout, all stocks are polymer and have the built in bipod. Supposedly the bipod is the only, problem, being prone to breaking and loosening, but is otherwise known for being a fantastic gun.
>>
Mauser k98 in 8mm.

Cheap, light, good stopping powah, durable.

7.62x39 is about the ballistic equivalent to 30-30 which has been a hunting cartridge since forever. 7.62x39 is plenty powerful and OP said he wanted something that fires inexpensive ammo.
