This may be a dumb assumption, but wouldn't you want an affordable, easy-to-replace gun for your nightstand gun, as opposed to a $900+ pistol/rifle setup? If I had to use a gun to stop a home invasion and have it confiscated as evidence, I'd prefer something I wasn't heavily invested in.
Maybe that's just me, though. I only bought my first gun 1 week ago, so I'm probably just a narrow-minded newguns.

It's a valid concern, but at the end of the day it's probably best to just use what you like and trust.

Most of us will probably never end up in a self-defense or home defense shooting, so the evidence locker shouldn't deter anyone from sticking to what they like.

That said, I would recommend buying newly made guns still in production for defensive use. If your gun does end up in an evidence locker, and you're unable to get it back for any reason, you'll at least be able to buy a new one.
