That is one of two things. Either a US Model 1917 that was converted into a sporter rifle after WW1 or it is an original Remington Model 30.
Its got this mechanism on the bolt, if that helps
My grandfather loved to make his own stocks so i could believe its a sporterized version of something

That rectangle piece is the bolt release. Lots of mauser type rifles had them. It has to be in that position to remove the bolt but I don't believe it should stay out on that on its own.

If you pull it out and let it snap back, it goes back to how it should be. This wouldnt be a sporterized Mauser, would it?
>>34314156
That is probably the case then as only around 30k Model 30s were made.

Who made them? Winchester? And what does the CCC stand for?
>>34314166
No, this is a M1917 which is based on the British Pattern 14 rifle which was based on Mauser actions.
During WW1 the US was producing Pattern 14 rifles for the British and when it came time for the US to enter the war we only had so many Springfield 1903s to give to our troops. All the factories at the time were still making Pattern 14 rifles for the British and retooling to make 1903s would have taken a lot of time so instead the US decided to make Pattern 14 rifles of their own in .30-06 and call them the M1917.

Remington, Eddystone, and Winchester all made M1917 rifles. I don't know what the CCC stands for though.
Well, I think you're right. I think it's a rifle.

Wow, thats great. Thank you for your info. So is this definitely a M1917??
30-06 CCC
Originally designed by Ralph Waldo Miller in the early 1940’s. His radical design had a single radius transition from shoulder to neck. The first cartridges of his design bore the name of M.V.F. (Miller Venturied Freebore). Later on, he teamed up with E. Baden Powell, a self-proclaimed ballistic expert, who changed the name of Miller’s cartridges into P.M.V.F.; Powell-Miller Venturied Freebore. Much later, Powell and Miller sold the cartridge designs to the Hollywood Gun Shop who marketed the identical P.M.V.F. cartridges as C.C.C.; Controlled Combustion Chamberage.

That is more likely than it being a Remington Model 30.
Also a fun fact, more 1917s served with US troops in WW1 than our official service rifle at the time, the 1903.

What does this mean? Some type of wildcat cartridge? Should OP be concerned about firing normal .30-06 in this rifle?
>>34314264
Wow, now thats awesome. So, in your opinion, whats this thing worth? My grandpa had tons of niffty weapons just floatin around his house
>>34314338
OP please see this. Did your Grandpa make his own ammunition? I'm still trying to find more about this but I'd be wary of shooting normal .30-06 in this rifle until you find out more.
>>34314404
Yea, he did. He was super big on 30-06

>So, in your opinion, whats this thing worth?
I don't have a clue desu. I've never even held one just know about them. Maybe try asking in the milsurp thread >>34314180

>Yea, he did. He was super big on 30-06
This doesn't appear to be normal .30-06 though. I've never heard of CCC chamberings. It appears to be some sort of 1950s~ wildcat and I would take it to a gunsmith to find out for sure before using normal .30-06 ammo.
>>34314453
What I mean is he probably had it rebarreled. The "30-06 CCC" coupled with the fact that he made his own ammo makes me quite sure.

Thank you for being honest and for all the help
>>34314869
Anytime, just don't want someone to get hurt using the wrong ammo.
Looks to be a very nice rifle and a great heirloom gun to pass on.

Another quick question, what would you value an 03A3 at? Got one of those from him as well
>>34314962
That would depend on a lot really. To be honest I don't know much about milsurp guns. I just like guns based on mauser style actions. If you posted some pics in the milsurp thread of the 03A3 there are some very knowledgeable people who could tell you the value.
