I think that's the look you get when you're smiling for the camera after getting a nice ticket home from any war ever and the only "menacing" thing about it is how it's not in colour.

I'm so sick of this "WW1 WAS ABSOLUTE HELL ARGH" memes. Stop watching that black and white video with the cow mooing over it and actually learn about the war.

For the average soldier not really. I mean, it's as hellish as any other war, but no more so. The whole, "they were in the trenches for months getting bombed every single day and everyone had lice and rats on them 24/7 and you're lucky to even sleep with the constant artillery! And the trenches were nothing but mud and boards!"

It was hell because of the conditions the soldiers lived in, and the destruction that was caused. To lives and the landscape.

>>

You have given such great evidence to contradict me.

>>34295947

You mean the conditions they lived in for a week at a time that weren't even that bad? Maybe on the very first trench but certainly not in a back trench or a communications trench. Do you mean the destruction that doesn't even rival the destruction of WW2?

Also yeah, that image probably doesn't have too much colour because it was most likely after an offensive and they had yet to clear the wrecks.

You guys need to read Baudrillard and see how images and other simulacra distort our reality.

Where we fought several times over the same ground bodies became incorporated in the material of the trenches themselves.’ He remembered in one place accidentally digging through corpses of Frenchmen killed and buried in 1915.

‘They were putrid, with the consistency of Camembert cheese. I once fell and put my hand right through the belly of a man. It was days before I got the smell out of my nails.’

Sounds like a real picnic.

If they were in a quiet sector, standard rotation time between front-reserve-rear was 18 days, for the Brits at least. If they were in a sector with heavy fighting it was a "whenever we can" situation. I've read accounts of some Brits staying in the front lines for three months, but I'm sure cases like that were rare.
>>
>>34302277
At the time of surrender, the German Askaris had stolen so much ammunition and supplies from the enemy, they couldn't ship it all with them when they moved. They were fully prepared to continue fighting.

Another fun fact, they received a pension from the Weimar republic until the Nazis seized control and the payments stopped. In the 1960s, West Germany decided to restore pension payments to the surviving Askaris. Unfortunately, not many had retained documentation of their military service. Many brought in medals or scraps of uniform to validate their claims. The German civil servant sent to distribute the payments got creative. He would have the pensioners come in one at a time. He handed the claimant a broom and ordered them, in German, to perform the manual of arms.
