Why haven't we seen an ar15 platform rifle chambered in 7.62x54r? With all the niche calibers out there, it seems like someone would've designed something?
Is it logistically a bad idea?
Pressure tolerances?
Can any anons who've dabbled in gunsmithing elaborate?
cartridge length. The short of it, it just don't fit.

Try google.

I can't speak with certainty about the rifle in and of it self, but considering its a rimmed cartage, you'd immediately run into issues loading it into a magazine. That's the reason auto, magazine fed guns have cartilages with recessed extraction rims.

You serious? Even an AR-10 is too short to take it. Same reason there are no 30-06 ARs.

this is based on the DPMS 308 platform

would like to see a comparison of him using that on steel targets vs 556
>>34271444
>vs 556
556 is a joke compared to 30-06
30-06 is arguably better than .308 even
the only reason why 7.62x51 was developed was because with modern powder in the 50s they were using less powder in the 30-06 cartridges for the same bang as the 06 standard specified.
so they reduced the cartridge size and changed to save money.
Noreen makes their bad news up to a .338 Lapua Magnum I think.

Because it's a long-ass rimmed cartridge that wouldn't fit even in AR10 dimensions, and with all the work and effort to build an AR in it, you will have an incredibly expensive gun, and you might as well just have bought a regular AR10 with regular .308 ammo and mags and not approach even close to the full cost of your proposed monstrosity, while having basically as good performance.

They wanted a shorter action for simplicity and reliability, building a magazine fed M1 that was still in .30-06 was bothersome, if you've ever seen some of those early prototypes, they ain't pretty.
The 7.62x51mm did everything the .30-06 did for them, at slightly less weight.
But a full powered rifle for infantry combat is antiquated and retarded anyway.

DoD is asking for new 7.62x51 RFN battle rifle designs to be submitted again.

Rim lock.
>ar15 platform rifle
this is wording is way overkill. Try something like
>AR15
>AR platform
>AR pattern rifle

I'm still waiting for someone to do a total redesign and upgrade of the M14 for shits and giggles.
None of that "take same receiver, do the absolute minimum redesign and stick it in a new stock" crap like with Osprey's MK36, but like a full on redesign.
is the ammunition fairy any good?
