Your cameras should be paired with motion detectors or laser tripwires that bring your attention to a particular camera, especially if it's tripped in a rarely-traversed area of your home. You can't monitor your home 24 hours a day, so having some early warning system in place is a good idea.

You should also have some secret peepholes you could fire through.

Pepper spray in the house is kind of an iffy thing. Better than nothing, safer for the kids, but you can still get a lot of that shit on yourself indoors. It's better as an outdoor thing. But still, if you "spray and run" to your firearm, might give you that little bit of time you need.

Security systems are UTTER GARBAGE. At best, they are a deterrent because of the little sign in your yard or the sticker on your door. At worst, they are >holy fuck infinite false alarms and fines from the PD for multiple callouts<. If the criminal ignores the sign/sticker, it's because he knows the PD response time. Save your money, just get a sign or sticker.

Cameras are straight 100. If you have it rigged for a 24 hour loop of saved data, that's godmode.

With the cameras, DO NOT INSTALL PREMADE INTERNET CONNECTED SOLUTIONS, companies which have such services usually use a proprietary system which is unencrypted, can easily be cracked into by anyone who has discovered the ip address of your cameras, and usually phones home to the security company. So either have the cameras disconnected to the internet and instead free footage to an external drive, or have the cameras setup on your local network so you can use your router as an encrypted VPN. The latter option can be acheived by adding network attached storage to your home network which your cameras are connected to, and setup a VPN on your router in its settings, which will allow your securely connect to your home wifi from anywhere.
