It's a true story, but the story has been revised several times by other people. The 70's, the Vietnam problems were all well and gone in the 80's.

Pretty much all significant problems were solved by the time the A1 was the implemented standard.
Shitty mags (mostly) gone, new buffer makes the action cycle the hot ammo at correct speed, chromed bore and chamber vastly improves reliability of extraction in harsh conditions, on top of greatly improving lifespan and being super easy to clean.

Speaking of which, the M16A1 came with a cleaning kit in it's stock, and instructions for it's use.
The forward assist is also arguably useful sometimes, and the pronged flash hider was eventually replaced with a birdcage.
