The old uniforms for the US navy were just solid navy blue, which did a decent job at hiding spots, but the camouflage pattern hides spots even better. Having stains hidden makes the force look overall more presentable.

If you're nuts deep in a repair, and you have brass touring the ship and they decide to open their eyes and even observe workers doing their thing around the ship, they'd be more impressed at a UNIFORM force that appears to not be covered in an inch of grease.

With bright orange, should you fall overboard or your Argentinian ship sinks, you can be easily spotted and rescued. Camo is to break up a silhouette. Solid gradients are usually pretty rare, so camo like this helps break up the silhouette of the soldier against a variety of backdrops rater than just one.
