You can protect your family by only using the 870 with #000 buckshot and slugs for maximum knockdown power, while the low velocity won't overpenetrate.

Nothing escapes the spread of #000 buckshot. Just shoot in their general direction, and the combination of just a few of those THIRTY TWO caliber pellets, along with the damage already dealt by the anxiety from you racking the slide, will finish the intruder off no problem. Slugs will send crack-infused dindus who are immune to buckshot, flying 10 feet across the room like in a movie.

30 rounds of high-powered AR-15 bullets, on the other hand, will overpenetrate through your house and kill your family, while adding to the domestic gun injury/death statistics. Don't use an ar-15 for HD.
