Pardon any derailment but this seems like the best thread; how come subhilts never caught on? It allows better control and retention and the only downside is that you can't ice pick grip it. It just seems handy even for a non-fighting knife.

The extra retention is unnecessary unless you are stabbing something. It would get in the way if you were using it as a general purpose knife.

Leather handles are very susceptible to mold and rot, especially if your in a humid area so I'd go with more modern material for handles, if your set on old school wood is much better. Also you can get knives that will last and work as well or better than that for less than 100 bucks easy
