OH SHIT. I didn't know they were having problems with their pistol barrels too!

Some guy came into my LGS with an M&P 15 Sport II he just bought. He said it was key holing like crazy and when he went to clean it he didn't see any rifling. My buddy at the store took a look and... yup, Smith and Wesson sent out a smooth bore AR barrel.

How the fuck do they let shit like that slip?

Fuck that OP needs to wash his hands of the situation as fast as possible. It should be documented that he returned a malfunctioning firearm.
This is self-lawyer 101.

Probably until he posted it about it on a public forum before returning it.

Retarded gun laws makes that an "any other weapon"
http://www.rugerforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?t=137698
>>
>>34237302
Yeah, start by contacting the manufacturer. Let them know that the firearm is malfunctioning or was incorrectly produced. They should provide a service to fix that, meaning, taking the gun back to the factory and repairing it.

Accuracy and velocity reasons. It would also matter because this is a massive fuck up from the company, assuming this is a factory barrel.
>>
>>34237369
Aside from then obvious 10 years if ATF finds out.
"Any other weapon" is a "catch-all" category. An AOW as defined as "any weapon or device capable of being concealed on the person from which a shot can be discharged through the energy of an explosive," other than a handgun with a rifled barrel".[3]
>>
>>34237311

The ATF isn't gonna kick your door in over something like this. They will go after the manufacturer if anybody, and even then probably just make them do a recall

>>
>>34237405
Don't touch it. Don't try to "fix it". The manufacturer could determine that what you're doing ruined the barrel, and then it's not their problem. Don't even put it back together. Put it in the box it came in, and contact the manufacturer.

Liability laws in the US are not designed to help the manufacturer, so they'll use anything and everything they can to try to shift blame.

>>

It's a factual statement whether you like it or not, a sbs is a toy more then a tool and there's nothing wrong with that.

Either one of three things happened.

1. Genuine defect from the factory
2. Your friend killed someone, took a wire brush to the inside of the barrel to throw off any potential ballistic fingerprinting, then gave it to you.
3. Your friend is an OCD idiot, and scrubbed the everloving shit out of the barrel with some sort of steel brush to clean it until the rifling was gone

Either way, mfw.
>>
>>34237534
That doesn't look like it was rifled in the first place. Cleaning it isn't going to do anything.
>>
Called sw, they'll look at it and see if it's defective then maybe fix it. Will a new barrel even properly fit?
>>
>>34237595
It should, but you'll probably have to send them the whole gun either way. They will give you a new one if there are any other issues

Spinning a round ball doesn't increase accuracy much if at all. The old rifles rifling was more help with the soot left over from the bp than accuracy.
The biggest problem with muskets it the ball fit to the barrel. Muskets had much bigger bores than their bullet which led to bouncing in the barrel which lead to inaccuracy. This was solved by the minnie ball. The sleeve would expand to fit the barrel leading to less bouncing and better velocity.

Not the guy you responded too, but that's not entirely true.

We had a customer come in with a barrel like OPs in his pistol, with some kinda rough spots where the rifling used to be (I think it was a P226; dunno wasn't there we he brought it in). After questioning how the fuck he did that, he casually mentionend that he cleaned it after every range trip (competition shooter, several times a week) with A FUCKING STEEL BRUSH.

This motherfucker would apparently sit on his couch and would continually scrub the barrel in & out while watching TV.
For hours on end.
Several times a week.
Over the course of several years.

He didn't know you're not supposed to do that.

We still have that barrel at work. I will take a picture tomorrow and if this thread is still up post it.

If you want a 9mm shotgun that isn't a SBS, you can't make it in the form factor of a S&W shield with 6" barrel.

You're not allowed to make smoothbore pistols (excepting black powder and pinfire). It's really that simple.
>>
>>34247610
You spin a baseball to add curve. If you want it to go straight you throw a knuckleball which doesn't spin at all. Your logic is all wrong
>>
>>34257333
Knuckleballs don't go straight, they have erratic flights due to chaotic turbulence. The spin of a curve ball gives it predictable consistent turbulence, making them more accurate.
