I agree 100% tho the military used to look cool as hell. As a young kid I lived in Oahu Hawaii during the late 90's and early 2000's. You'd see army convoys driving around in the center of the island all the time. Paratroopers used train on the north shore where we lived for a bit, we could see them jump just a mile away.
Shit was dope as hell, and my dad was a Vietnam vet so we could go on base. I remember how cool they looked with the woodland BDUs and all.

I still doubt it, as the Rhodesians also had issues with mobility. What few helicopters they had were not very capable compared to even those in contemporary US service, let alone today, their paratroopers were equipped only with what they could carry since they could not drop mobility vehicles or count on aerial resupply, their vehicles were mostly light & small, and lengthy foot patrols/marches were commonly required. Add in the fact that they were using a heavy full power battle rifle as their service weapon, and I doubt that carrying tens of pounds of armor was high up the average Rhodesian soldiers wish-list, regular or reservist.

You have to be a moron if you actually believe this. Almost everything now was developed because all the shit you mentioned went into combat and failed or didn't perform as expected.Here's a short list

Molle: More customizable to soldier preference and lightweight compared to alice clips or the horrendous LBE.
Body Armor: Each soldier is now actually equipped with body armor that will protect them from rifle calibre rounds with a pretty good coverage around the torso.
Rails: Allows soldiers to mount shit to their guns in the field instead of having to take it to the armorer and have the armorer replace hanguards and shit.
Ballistic glasses: Soldiers like seeing, would be a shame if some high velocity sharp object entered their eye and made them not see and shoot people.
Boots: don't have to waste time spit shining, and now feel more like running shoes which mean less fucked up feet and ankles, comfier soldier, more effective soldier.

You can always scale down tech as conflict goes on or remove some of this fancier shit, but while you can have it, why not have it? Christ man, why not just go scale down all the way back to stones and wooden spears. Definitely no trouble producing those. Also war of attrition is what you don't want to get into, and probably won't happen unless nukes get disabled.

Special forces do. Standard army issue is aramid body armor with ballistic plates, steel in old cheap models, ceramic in the elite models and modern regular issue vest (6B43).

Issue of rifle proof armor as standard started in 1999 with 6B13 vest.
