How does this happen? They were outnumbered 10:1 at the start of the battle. More civilians have been killed than ISIS were ever present in the city.
What sort of tactics and defenses does ISIS have in place to put up such a stalwart opposition?

It's fucking hell on earth. A car bomb can fuck up an entire unit and ISIS have used six hundred of them at least inside the city alone. The amount of warning before they detonate can be seconds.
