I have one of the double rifle w pistol xr2p Taco pouches and its too high speed high drag for my PC so im going to move one or 2 to my belt

Should I go with the single taco rifle up front and put the pistol mags on my left side or go with the single rifle single pistol tacos up front?
Are the single kangaroos more low drag?

what are the pouches on the sides and bottom?
>>
>>34216935
Each side has a 1qt canteen and an IFAK pouch. One of the IFAK pouches is actually marked for and carrying medical gear. Other pouch is carrying some incidentals like gloves and flashlight. Pouch on the bottom is a GI waistpack designed to mate to the pack. Got a 1 person tent in there.
>>
>>34216876
Regular Comtacs trap sweet in the cups and can get real stuffy in hot weather. The Comtac IVs were made to alleviate the issue. They provide the same function though.

I have a question for you /gq/ how bad is the issued hear from the US army. I ship off to basic soon and so I'm going to get issued a load of it.

Is it really as bad as I've heard or is it just the meh tier that will do the job but isn't anything flashy.

Also is there any actually good issued hear that the army get nowadays?
>>
>>34217943
Looking to sell any of them to a fellow /gq/ on the cheap :^)?
>>
>>34218347
it does the job, but don't worry about gear though. The purpose of basic isn't to look cool.
>>
>>34218168
Yes. They make good stuff.

>>34218225
Good quality.
>>
>>34218373
I'm not expecting it to look cool, I have my eyes on other things, I'm more just thinking when I get new gear and uniforms is it worth keeping or getting rid of it. But if it does the job I might as well throw it in a crate somewhere as backups.

the material is a little on the thin side, to save weight, but I dont see any issues with durability. A large thorn plant might give it a run for its money but if you're not worried about that then I'd say you're fine. The shoulder straps are stupid comfy. The zippers also slide really well open and closed, but not well enough to come undone by themselves.

ive only had it a month so its still kind of a toss up if its going to last, but if you catch Letsego from /arg/ in here; he has a three day and I think he took it on a deployment. Hes the reason I bought my Komodo
>>
>>34218387
Will keep an eye out, thanks for the info.
>>
>>34218386
you wont be getting rid of it my dude, it belongs to the US Government. Uniforms you keep but actual kit you have to turn back in.
>>
>>34218374
Have you used their straps? Can't decide between skinny and fat
>>
>>34218358
Yeah, probably. I want to clean them up first though, some are kind of salty. I'll probably put up the liberator II's and comtac III's first. I'll just go through my list of people I said I'd contact first, then post on here, and then in the unlikely case they don't all disappear, put them on ebay.

>they aren't all the same mind you, some are setup to be mounted on rails of fast style helmets, some are normal headband, and some are that under-the-helmet-and-back-of-the-head strap system. Probs looking at $170-22ish depending on model, mounting setup, condition, etc. I'm going to keep the IV's and a pair of III's that are in good shape tho.
>>
>>34218386
>Getting rid of it..

Dude you know you gonna turn it back in right?

Theres some stuff you'll be required to use. Some stuff that works good (poncho liner), some stuff that works good but is heavy, some stuff thats completely useless. That's just how it goes, depending on where you end up, you may get issued better stuff, or even have the ability to use personal gear. But that all depends.

Pro Tip - Dont fucking get rid of anything.
>>
>>34218410
I have not, but me personally, I would get the fat ones. Just IMO.
>>
>>34218430
>I would get the fat ones.

>>34218411
Hit me up with an email with some pics and prices when you get the chance. I'd be interested in some III's with either the helmet mount or the headband

>>
>>34218456
How sad would you be if I told you that you missed a restock, like last weekend?

Follow them on insta, they post their release dates and information on there. Also if you scroll down on their feed a bit, they are in the works with a new rig... I believe they showed some of them at shot show. You should check them out, I have a feeling that they will be dropping them sometime this year.
>>
>>34218476
I would be very sad. I'll give em a follow, thanks for the tip.
>>
>>34218347
I got out in 2014, so some of the gear I used has been replaced, but most of it is the same. Most of what you are issued works really well- there are only so many ways to make a mag pouch or GP pouch. Some of what you are issued like the FLC or TAPS are meh, but usable.

Worst gear that is issued:
>GI ruck. Big plastic framed piece of shit. When I went overseas we all got BAMF Mystery Ranch and Eberlestock replacements issued.
>GI helmet straps. The ACH is a fine helmet, but the straps are a shit. Upgrade to something else if you want to wear NODs comfortably.
>Triple mag shingle- it is stupid loose.
>IOTV. Big bulky piece of shit with way too thick soft armor in it. No way around wearing this bitch. If you are in a deployment allowing plate carriers, you might get a green light to wear something nice from the aftermarket.
>A2 pistol grip on your rifle
>TBQH, quad rails are kind of a shit compared to a MOE or a tubular free float.
>Canteens. The design is fine but never actually drink out of issued canteens, just buy your own to use.
>Being forced to wear high cut boots. Low cut is so fuckin' comfy and light weight. Never rolled an ankle in low cuts on a deployment, but the Army is retarded and wants you to blouse boots for no raisin.

The TLDR though is that better gear is better, but if it can't operate in GI shit you can't operate. Learn to tie down, adjust, and properly lay out your used gear.
>>
>>34218403
Oh I knew about the gear itself but the uniforms is what I was talking about.

any reason why you want to do that? buttpacks really aren't suited for wear on your armor. maybe on your belt with suspenders under your armor?

I just don't really want to buy a MAP pack I guess. Was just looking in for a possible stand in. If the straps are long enough, I may be able to just look them through the molle.

I would prefer to avoid a huge wide padded belt in the crazy heat and humidity of the south. But I guess if plan to carry a handgun in a low ride holster I can't avoid it.

>>
>>34225155
It's a usgi desert night parka from desert storm. I cut off the bottom 8 inches of it. They are not expensive or really that rare yet. The one I am wearing is a large regular. They are designed to fit over all of your gear so the run large.
>>
>>34225155
Not him, but the US gubberment makes them.

Desert night camouflage, you can find them as surplus on the bay. They're meant to be over suits with a liner for cold desert nights, so they're sized pretty large and are very long. If you want one closer fitting, get a size down from your usual size, and have the bottom hemmed if you want it shorter.

The pants are sized pretty normal thoigh, but anything over small short is getting expensive.

Graduated basic March 30th and almost done with AIT. The gear we got at Benning was shit, my ruck sack had nothing holding it to the frame but duct tape, my wet weather bag and poncho had holes in them, they size your uniforms hilariously too large (I was given larges and came to AIT and DXed into small top and medium pants). My M16 was a dirty cunt that even after scrubbing it for hours in the bay couldn't cycle blanks or simunitions.

Looks like "Duck Hunter Camo" to me
>>
>>34226299
Yeah, it looks like you're right. Apparently it was made for by both civilian and military manufacturers--know how to tell which it was? The manufacture is pretty rough and there's no bullshit on the tag, so I'm leaning towards surplus, but the material feels like a pretty modern nylon or vinyl kind of stuff, and I don't know if the US has made it that recently.

Does the tag being in English rule out foreign surplus? It seems like foreign militaries have used it a lot more recently than we have.
>>
>>34226376
The US military (Mitchell "duck camo" was made in the 9170s, but doesn't look like that) hasn't made any camo like that since the 1960s. It could a repro literally made for duck hunters.

English on the tag rules out nothing. It could be Chinese sweat shop commercially made gear. The only way to check and see if it's surplus is to find a Federal Stock Number (FSN) or NSN, which going to be 13 numbers long on the tag. Plug it in and the item should pop up on google.
>>
>>34226448
>Mitchell "duck camo" was made in the 9170s

1970s
>>
>>34226448
There's no number on the tag. It's literally just a size and washing instructions. And it doesn't match any of the patterns on Camopedia. Maybe it is just a really shitty, cheap civilian repro, but oh well. I kinda like it anyway, I'm not that autistic about genuine milsurp
>>
>>34226496
That's my guess. Well, now you can abuse it and modify it without worrying about history.

Remember the NSN or FSN as go-to searches any time you question US gear. Super easy way to grab info.
>>

Some shop in the U.K.

They are a hundred of dollars more on the secondary. Supply and demand. All of the military entitlement butthurt was hilarious and I'm prior service.
>>
>>34226616
Ok. I'm really not that into milsurp, I just keep ending up with it anyway. I don't go out of my way to buy it, I just get it at thrift stores if I see it, and I keep being given it by family members who don't want it. Anyway, thanks for the pointers.

I was kinda curious if it was milsurp, kinda just wanted to make sure it wasn't shitty meme tier civilian camo that would get me laughed at.

Reading the Max Velocity pages to see if there is any great insight. Most of the insights seem like stuff anybody who has deployed even once would know. The cold weather is I guess illuminating for anybody who hasn't had to do cold weather operations.

His insistence that chest rigs just can't possibly be used (well) for dismounted work is a little weird, especially considering the cadre pictures all show them using chest rigs or pouches on the front of their armor. There is also the fact that he took a US Army FLC- which in standard confirugation actually matches the LBE style he favors, modified it into a chest rig configuration (which is totally viable) and then loaded the chest rig configured FLC up with all of his survival gear. He then complained that chest rigs were too bulky. Yeah, nigga if you put everything on a chest rig it's going to be bulky. Dude has photos of himself in a chest rig+shooter belt but doesn't seem to acknowledge that in his writing. There has yet to be in what I've read yet, a discussion of day/assault packs, which are IMO better than having all your bulky sustainment gear on your shooting gear. His opinions seem kinda like he has been trained in valid ways (I get the impression UK training used to emphasize sustainment gear on personal gear), but now insists that his way is the only way- despite having US guys on the training team and photos of himself dressed in the more modern style.

I'm copy/pasting any opinions of his that catch my eye though.

yeah he's changed positions on a lot of stuff (armor a bad, brit-style LBE a good, chest rigs a bad, LBE a good). now he sells chestrigs that attach to plate carriers.
>>
>>34227956
Just weird that a guy with a decade of SAS experience is just now in the past few years warming up to chest rigs. Surely in his time before becoming a tactical blogger he had encountered them. I dunno, it seemed like this weird foreign concept to him- especially when he kept loading up chest rigs with tons of sustainment gear and then complaining about not being about to go prone. It's just like, how does a guy with so much experience think in such extreme terms.
>>
Where is a good place to read up on drills to do in gear?
>>
>>34227990
he's not SAS, he was a para or something and then he was a contractor in Iraq. in my experience the brits are usually pretty myopic about gear setups outside of their own military experience.
>>
>>34227956
Add: Wait, he was on the "armor is bad" team?

Because an argument against full cut soft armor can be made- or more specifically the argument that it is only of situational value and should not be the standard. But plate carriers add so much value for what they weigh. Short of being in full on E&E "run as fast as you fucking can" mode, plates are great.
>>
>>34228016
this is all just based off my recollections but he used to be of the opinion that plates were too much weight for rural operations especially in a freedom-fighting context. idk if that's an accurate recollection

I can't tell you anything about the parka itself, but the camo is famous. It's a camo unofficially called "duck hunter," because the military issue items printed with it were based on camo jumpsuits designed for duck hunters in the 30s which were commonly used by hunters up until the late 80s. As you can expect, there are lots of variations like there are with tiger stripe patterns. Various elements of the US military and some militaries in SE Asia (S. Vietnam, Thailand, etc.) issued items in duck hunter style patterns from around 1940 to the mid 70s. There was military gear (usually uniforms, ponchos, and helmet covers) made in this type, but a lot of commercially-available gear marketed to hunters ended up falling into military use (most notably by "advisors" in Vietnam). More information on commercial patterns in US military and CIA use can be found on camopedia, which is basically a database of all known camouflage patterns that have been issued.

No I'm just giving you a rub. Kids on /MEG/ think that because Rangers or SF take the occasional casualty it means a boot 11b can just somehow end up deploying to door doorkicking in 2017.

Also, for the JPC, I never saw the appeal of it when you have to buy your own gear. It's neat when it's disposable on the government dime, but really the tiny extra bit of weight on a more conventional plate carrier is no biggie. Ounces make pounds, but sometimes you just have to step back and not be autistic.

I am looking for a molle ready pistol holster for my pc. I would prefer something that isn't the large 'one size fits all' but rather something that fits medium compact pistols and cuts down on length. An extra mag pouch would be nice but isn't necessary.

No. Especially no if you are mounting this on a plate carrier.

They were meant for you to mount mag pouches horizontally on your chest. Pouches directly on the armor was a backup, most stuff was still assumed to be carried on an ALICE or SPEARS loadbearing rig.

Don't think so, but:

Kelty
Eagle industries
London Bridge Trading
Gregory
Mystery ranch
Eberlestock
Arcteryx
North Face
Rei
other major mainstream commercial pack manufactures

If you're looking for a ruck, don't underestimate a black or tan hiking pack with a coat of krylon paint. I know a lot of guys are against getting even a speck of dirt on their stuff, but I'm the kind of person that thinks gear is gear, and cost shouldn't limit possible effectiveness.

I used to use north face terra 55 all the time for multi day outtings. I sprayed one coat of tan krylon paint on it, no problems. After a couple months of constant use, it started to wear off, so I just sprayed it again. I haven't sprayed it since, and it's a been about a year of off and on use, here's what it looks like now.
>>
>>34230857
If you want a good one or two day pack and dont NEED a ultra tactical "3 day pack", look on craigslist or ebay and buy used last year's model.

You can get a top of the line 3 years ago pack that's lighter, tougher, and all around better than anything new you could buy for the same amount of money.

I understand guys get stuff for cool factor, but when dollars come to donuts, you don't need to spend the extra dough to get something jumpable.

Civilian rucks are good and usually more modern than milsurp stuff. I love my military Mystery Ranch but know the price point is pretty high.

I wouldn't spray paint a ruck itself as it stiffens and fucks with the fabric though. A rain cover works better. I got a milsurp DCU cover for cheap and sprayed and camo'd it to go on my pack and think that is a better solution.

I'm interested in getting a casual pair of glasses for shooting, /out/ and working on the car.

Are you buying the frames then taking to a local place to get lenses made?
How do you know what size frame to get?

Looks neat, and solves the high vis problem of a lot of high quality low weight commercial packs.
>>
>>34232004

Apparently it's a standard frame so hopefully it'll fit my giant head. I asked at Walmart (the vision center) and they said they'd put the lenses in all I'd need to do is bring the frames. DEFENDING WALMART for some reason I have been to another optometrist after having gone to Walmart for my glasses and stuff before and ironically they were worse than Walmart. Didn't even get the prescription right and it cost twice as much.

What I'm trying to say here is they'll do it at Walmart, but it never hurts to ask. If they don't fit I'm just shooting myself.

Currently have Howard Leight Impact Sports which are adequate, but don't block out enough of the gunshot noise IMO. Seems other earpros are about the same or worse at around 20 NRR.

basically it goes like this
do you want to be high speed
do you just want to block noise

if you want to be high speed you're either peltor comtacs or msa sordin supremes. you're still going to have to use earplugs underneath but at least the gel pads are comfy as fuck
if you want to block noise you're going with big ass stuff. physically big because that's how noise gets blocked. pro ears or impact pros.

out of all of those the cheapest are impact pros. pro ears go on sale for $200 sometimes and on ebay you can snag sordins for fairly cheap. comtacs i know botach does $250 when they have them but they are out of stock right now

Not exactly. The NRR rating for electronic hearing protection is usually very conservative since the attenuation varies across frequencies. In the frequency range relevant to shooters, Comtacs and Sordins both provide more than enough attenuation.

pic related is from the Comtac XPI technical datasheet

>>
>>34236147
What do you think about crye and patagonia, any favorites/real differences?
>>
>>34236255
They are both good in there own respects and you'd be hard pressed to find anything better.

I can say that most the young guys would choose Crye just for the cool guy factor since its what our bigger brothers wear (IE: DEVGRU & CAG).

That being said, the saltier guys don't care so much.

Personal opinion is that I prefer the Crye G3 top over the Patagonia because the collar is larger and prevents rash from sling.

As for the bottoms, after you break in the knee pads for the Patagonia and use them as intended they work great, better then the Crye G3's since those required some modifications on my part to ensure the knee pads stayed in.
>>
>>34236311
I see, I personally prefer the patagonia shirt due to the smaller collar. Sadly I dont have the pants, but I dont really have any problems with the crye g3
>>
>>34236363
Crye kneepads pop out sometimes. Some people tuck the flaps under the pocket and others still just wrap tape around them to keep them secure
>>
>>34236526
Heard rumors if that, is there any way to prevent that, ir help prevent it. Like having some super glue on it, to keep it in place.
>>
>>34236561
Add extra velcro on the pad, tuck the flaps under. It seems to be totally sporatic and very much so based on circumstance. I've never had a problem with mine, but I know people that have.

Not ranger anon, but LEO in a big city here on the SWAT team.

In my experience, the crye knee pads "pull" out more often than they fall out. If you take a knee quickly on a uneven surface and move around or pivot quickly (I don't know how to describe it) they tend to pop out. I sewed velcro strips on the inside of the pockets on the pants, and glue velcro to the inside of the pad itself.

I haven't used the Patagonia pants, as they just aren't standard for us and we can't be bothered to have them contracted in blue, unlike the cryes. Plus that extra $72 adds up quick when you wear out pants every few months.
