I have 2 mosin nagants, took a long time to get cosmo out of the barrel. Discovered my one was counterbored, but its a good shooter.

Try to push a 7.62x54r cartridge bullet down into the muzzle to check the bore, check the rifling, inspect the locking lugs and the lockup, etc...

Basically the more you can inspect, the better.

Generally speaking if the rifling is fine the gun hasn't been shot all that much and shouldn't have an serious problems, mosins are fairly well built. Of course check everything you can, bore/rifling, bolt, extractor, firing pin, lugs, bolt face, make sure the lock up is tight.

if it's covered in a brown, oily, paste-like substance, you'll know that it's still in cosmoline.

If you can inspect any of it, do it for your benefit. $140 is a good price, so I would do it. Just be prepared to strip it down to nothing and clean each part very thoroughly. If you can't check over the parts, know that it is very cheap to replace shit and it doesn't take a mechanical engineer to get it into good working shape.

Why do you Americans call it Mosin-Nagant? It's just Mosin.
