Reminds me of that story about the three US marines who were sent out to recon a Japanese camp on Saipan. Two Marines got injured or became sick due to the jungle conditions and had to wait behind whilst the one lone marine continued on. He stumbled upon a medium sized Japanese camp in the night with one lone sentry guarding it and bayoneted every Japanese soldier as he slept. Wiped out an entire battalion. It's highly similar to the OPs story in the sense it didn't happen either.
