I am trying to draw a person with modern equipment whose look is inspired by ancient Roman legionaries. To emulate the lorica segmentata, I wanted to use straight, thin mag pouches horizontally in vertical columns on the chest.

But the problem is, I'm concerned about what is the best weapon and magazine to go with. I want it to be plausible, though not necessarily practical. Like, he needs to be able to wear it and still move and be able to get the mags out. But he doesn't have to be able to do it well. I was going to use a P-90, because it has better armor penetration than SMG's pistol cartridges, but the mag looks like it may be too long.

In the pic related, I have a guy wearing 5 cell Thompson 20 round mag pouches. I think I could go with something slightly longer (25 rounds in 9mm?), but not much. I'm guessing 30 round Thompson mags, for example, simply wouldn't fit.

The gun should ideally not be too big. I'd like to pair it with a ballistic shield; a small short range gun and rectangular shield to match the gladius and scutum of a legionary. Again: not super practical, but technically functional. Let's assume this guy is ridiculously strong.

So, /k/, what is the gun and mag size I should use?

Requirements:
-should be an SMG, machine pistol, or PDW
-Needs to be straight magazines
-need to be able to fit two columns of horizontal pouches on the torso

Bonus:
-the higher capacity the better
-armor penetration is a plus
-ideally something not TOO exotic

personally if I were trying to do a modern day roman, as a character design (I used to work in the videogame industry when younger) I'd say a more effective way to convey "roman" would be to have pteruges on waist and shoulder - the leather strap-like segments which are seen on most classical roman depictions. They create the line shape you're trying to capture - so much so that medieval "alla antiqua" armour was made with those as the main detail to say that it was "classical" armour - even when the rest was utterly anachronistic.

So, do a body armour plate carrier with modern camo/khaki textiles in texture and surface detailing, but then have shoulder defences as the textile covering for plate inserts that arch over, in the same way as the lorica's spaulders do, and then trim it with matching material pteruge strips that go down the upper arm, and on the waist - perhaps they've light ballistic armour inside, or the likes. Those, as a visual element will say as much that its roman, as anything else. I would then put a smaller number of ammunition pouches on the belt and strapping to echo the baldric for the Gladius, so you have the diagonal strap over the lorica, to help that visual style further.

I'd also do a modern combat helmet, but with earpieces that go down and forward to mirror the roman helm style, but keeping the face exposed - lets you see the character. Stuff like NV equipment could be attached on easily enough.
Use little design hints to tie it all together.

Pugio combat knife, in place of a modern clip-pointed knife. If you can justify it, large lexan style riot shield of Roman scutum shape and size?

As for the firearm, keep it simple, go with a straight silhouette that's easily recognisable, rather than anything fancy and organic - like the Gladius you want something that's straight if possible, (so _not_, for instance, something with curved fore-grips like the P90.). I would be inclined to say H&K Mp7 or G36k style profile, perhaps.

Why not just have horizontal STANAG pouches? Or use MOLLE and twist pouches sideways.
>It's curving up/down
Use the straight mags/Pmags.

Im not really sure what youre looking for but id say you should stick to the smaller subguns or a machine pistol to use with a shield. P90 seems akward to use one handed but something like a mac10/11 with the stock folded is much more natural looking i guess. Or like a glock 18, if you really want a stock just draw one one, they make kits. Think more automatic pistol than dedicated subgun imo

Why do we call Enfield rifles Enfields?
>>
>>34200583
Because that was their official designation.

The Spandau was developed at the Spandau Arsenal, and was often listed as the Spandau MG-08. The MG-34 was part Rheinmetall and part Mauser, the MG-42 was Großfuß AG.

LB is a retard. Even if British troops did call them that, there is no reason for him to use that term to describe 3 very different machine guns. You know the right term, you have no need to use a colloquialism that doesn't exist anymore. There's no excuse.

Segmentata sucks. It looks more like shitty reenactors than ancient Romans.
I'd use this look as an example instead. Give the grunt a long tunic with a flak vest in a similar shape to the lorica hamata. Put mag pouches on there.
Use a coolus helmet (its neckguard shape would actually let you go prone) with cheekguards reduced or removed so he can aim properly.
Put a bayonet in a scabbard hanging from the right hip.
Pterigues could be added as cloth camo strips.

If you're going to give them shields, put some kind of mounting bar on the side or top of it to either rest or lock in the rifle. Shooting a rifle one handed while holding on to a shield looks kinda stupid.
